Darrell's Story

Life Life definitely seems like a blur since Addis. I have been doing a variety of things. I went to university in Boulder, Colorado and got my mechanical engineering degree. After graduation I took a job with Amoco and moved up to Wyoming. Casper was a cold a uninviting place but as luck would have it I met my future wife there. Brenda and I got married in 1981 (the big 25 is just around the corner - amazing!) and moved down to Denver late that year. Denver was good. We lived there before Addis and my folks moved there after Addis so I have always considered it home. We spent 2-1/2 years there and then a job in Egypt opened up. Back to Africa.... We spent 5-1/2 years in Cairo which was a generally good time. I worked a week on / week off schedule so we traveled a fair bit on my weeks off and tried to see the sights in the middle east. We never made it to Addis but we did get to Kenya and it hadn't changed much, just more crime. After Cairo we moved to the French Congo and lived in a costal village called Pointe Noire for 3 years. We enjoyed learning French (Madame Wilt would have been proud) and seeing lots of new countryside. We found the people friendly and the community was diverse and lots of fun. After Congo we got a cold surprise - Norwa...Expand for more
y - I got transferred to Stavanger. We enjoyed our time there and decided that since we were FINALLY out of Africa we would start a family. Our daughter, Lauren, was born in 1993. Norway is a very family friendly place and we would probably move back in a New York second. In 1994 we took a transfer, back to Denver, for the second time. Our second daughter, Sarah, was born there in 1997. Five weeks after Sarah's arrival we moved to London. (Every 2-1/2 years we seem to move). London was a great place to live until BP and Amoco merged and we got moved to Houston in the merger shuffle. In February 2000 we had our third child, Trevor, and I think we're done growing the family. The kids have been a real blessing in our lives and we are enjoying the new roles of parenthood every day. In September 2001 we had a family tragedy when my dad passed away. He had an aortic aneurysm and was ill for about two weeks before he passed on. In June 2002 we picked up again and moved to Baku, Azerbaijan, where we currently are. An interesting place and the people are friendly - so life is good. So that's my story. Lots of details missing (since I'm still a two finger typist) but they'll have to wait for the next reunion. I will definitely be looking forward to it.
