Daru's Story

II arrived in the town of Waterloo, Ontario in January 1994 and went to school at Northdale Public School starting at the second grade. I moved in from Yogykarta, Indonesia. My Dad is a lecturer in Universitas Gadjah Mada who is taking on his Ph.D. in University of Waterloo at that time. I remembered my second grade teacher that time was Mr. Nelson. A few of my friends that I still remember from that class are Rohit Narayan, Pedro Montelli, Jia Jiang, Mark McCenzie (the name spelling are probably wrong). My English wasn't so good yet so I had to be in a special class with Mrs. Wagner. Because of her, I could learn English very quickly. In the third grade, my teacher was Mrs. Clement. My English have gotten really good and I speak almost like a native Canadian. I got good in ice skating. One day I got invited to a birthday party of one of my classmate, Tommy Halbrook. As a part of his birthday party, we went to a skating rink. Because I didn't know how to skate, Tommy's Dad taught me, and in less than an hour, I was like a natural. It was like magic. I could skate like those kids in a pee wee hockey team. That was one of the most memorable moments in my third grade. In the fourth grade, my teacher was an exchange teacher from Ireland, Ms. Rosa Matthews. I was quite a smarty pants because I was one of the best in class....Expand for more
I was the best in sports, arts, science, and even maths (which I totally suck right now). Every week we have a "star competition", we get a bunch of stars for getting good marks in tests, being the most tidy, etc. etc. In the end of the week, the student with most stars will get a present from Ms. Matthews. I often got Twizzlers. I could still remember the best moments in Northdale Public School for me such as playing Crazee Carpets down the top hill in winter; singing Christmas Carols almost everyday in December; pajama day where we get to see a movie in the auditorium (gym); pizza day; and still many other. My Dad finished his studies in 1996, so in March 1996 I had to go back to Indonesia. I felt really sad having to go back to the "real world" after spending more than two years in such a nice place with all the nice people in Waterloo, Ontario. I then continued my elementary school in SD Serayu II Yogyakarta, SMP 8 Yogyakarta (Middle School), SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta (highschool), and Universitas Gadjah Mada majoring in International Relations. I graduated uni in 2009 and now currently working in the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar as a staff in the politics section. I still have a dream until now, to go back to Waterloo, Ontario, where I got the best of my childhood. Thank you Northdale Public School.
