Darwin's Story

Life The Life Bio of Darwin Enicks... I classify the following part of my life as PROFESSIONAL - MIDDLE AGE. Since 1992, I've lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I enjoy hiking, 4x4ing (it's thrilling to be at 45deg angle in a 4x4 on a trail hovering 2000 feet over a valley), mountain biking, skiing, photography of the great outdoors, mountaineering,... mountaineering is my favorite. So far I've climbed 37 of Colorado's 14'ers. The 14'ers are mountains that are more than 14,000 feet in elevation. Summiting is a real rush. My goal is to complete all 54 by 2008, and then to climb the 14 14er's in California. In 2004 I was afforded the opportunity to climb one of the highest Alps in France, the Barre Des Ecrin... It was glacial from 6500 feet up to the summit at around 13,500 feet and filled with crevasses. Two climbers fell into a crevasse just the day prior to our (I was with a guide) visit. It was creepy to traverse the crevasse knowing 2 climbers were dead below. There's danger, but if you utilize good mountaineering practices it's no more dangerous than driving (ok I have some swamp land to sell you). I own a home with a great view of Pikes Peak (14,110 ft) from my back deck and front yard. It's a 1974 vintage that I remodeled (it's still going). The weather in Col Spgs is awesome. Nice summers, in the 80's, and the winters are snowy enough to be beautiful, without making you sick of it. We live close enough to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons to get there in one day (I climbed the Grand Teton in 2006), or about the same distance to Lake Powell Arizona, or Moab Utah. I enjoy traveling in the US and abroad. My current job allows me to go to places like France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Malaysia, China, Japan, etc... However, it is a somewhat hectic, stressful, and at the same time enjoyable career. This coming June I'm traveling to Belfast to visit with researchers at Queens University, then on to southern Ireland for a tour of the many castles there. I always mix work with pleasure. If you're going to work your butt off, you might as well get some enjoyment from it. Well, I've presented good side from about the past 10 years. However, it did not start that way. In high school I classify myself as shy, socially awkward, athletic, and very nerdy. I classify this part of my life as BONEHEAD. I never went on a date until graduation. I got off to a rocky start out of High School... My track "career" fell through when injuries began cropping up. Considering that it was a big part of my life at that time, it was a heavy blow. I certainly wasn't going to make the Olympic team and how was I going to afford college? (this is where violins come in)... However, being the nerd that I was I eventually found I coul...Expand for more
d do quite well in technical subjects. From 1981 through 1984 I classify this part of my life as CONFUSED. I did not know what to do with myself and the future seemed so bleak. So I applied for Westpoint and somehow got in. It was a good experience. I grew up a little there and it got me away from some bad influences that were in my life (too much partying). I spent about 1.5 years at Westpoint before suffering a collapsed lung during a training excercise. It put a "damper" on my plans for becoming a pilot. So, disappointed, I left (more violins) and went to the University of Oklahoma (GO SOONERS!) in '86, where I enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace program. It was fun, time flew by, and so did many "bad" relationships. This is now the CARELESS part of my life. Somehow, through 2 broken marriages, more partying, I managed to pull out the BSME, 1989. To put it mildly, I was a wild child in the '80's (it was seriously sad) I worked 2 years in OK before moving to Colorado Springs in '92. It turned out to be a good move. I've since obtained an MSEE and PhD EE and have been working in the Semiconductor Industry in Mfg and R&D. I'm now an Engineering Manager. I am out of room now. Bye College This is short and sweet... McNeese State '82 - '83 Engineering focus Westpoint '84 - '85 Screwed around for 1.5 years, decided to try the United States Military Academy at Westpoint Collapsed lunge during training... not good for a military career, so I left for the University of Oklahoma. Besides, there was a gal there that I liked... University of Oklahoma - '86 to '89 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with aerospace emphasis (I was lucky considering the amount of partying) University of Colorado - 2004 Master of Science in Electrical Engineering University of Colorado - 2007 PhD in Electrical Engineering... Now I have more time to roam the internet... but I'm considering an MBA and JD from Denver University... Darwin Workplace 1981 - 1984 odd jobs... construction, furniture salesman 1984 - 1985 Cadet at Westpoint (cadets get paid for going to school) 1986 - 1989 Student at Univ. of Okla... also worked some at UPS as a sorter.. it was good pay for a college kid 1989 - 1991 Worked as an engineer for Oklahoma Gas and Electric in Oklahoma City... I left JUST BEFORE the bombing... worked just around the corner from the Murrah building ... I also lived in one of the suburbs that was leveled by the cat5 tornado... I was lucky to leave 1992 - 1996 owned and operated a small construction company 1996 - current Engineering Manager in the Semiconductor Industry My place of employment covered 65% of the expenses for me to return to school for the MSEE and PhD EE
