Dave's Story

Life: I was born in Cambridge, MA and raised in Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle, Maine. I attended Bangor High School, John Bapst Memorial High School, and graduated from Presque Isle HS in 1964. I met Linda Allison at PIHS in October, 63, and we were married in June 67. We both graduated from the University of Maine, Farmington with degrees in Special Education. We received our M.Ed's from U Maine-Orono in 1971; and I received an MA in Organizational Behavior and Leadership from Catholic University, Washington, DC, in 1983; and an MA in School & Career Counseling from Chapman University in Colorado Springs in 1991. I supplemented that degree with 24 credit hours at the University of Colorado to obtain licensure in the State of Colorado as a Secondary School Counselor. I have also completed 90% of the MA in Educational Leadership at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Subject to the draft in 1971, I enlisted in the Army in April while completing 21 graduate hours (7 courses)to earn an M. Ed at University of Maine in Orono. I attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC and Artillery Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, OK. I was commissioned in the Air Defense Artillery, April 1972. We spent 22 years on active duty with assignments in New York City, Korea, North Carolina, Germany, Washington, DC, Colorado, and ultimately back in Maine where I was the Professor of Military Science at the University of Maine - Orono for the Army ROTC program. We had school and training tours at Fort Jackson,SC, Fort Sill, OK, Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Benning, GA, and Fort Leavenworth, KS. We had a great career with tours of Command at the Company and Battalion levels, as an Aide de Camp, the Army Staff, as well as Battalion level staff as an S-1, S-3, and XO. I retired in 1992 as a LTC and returned to public education as a teacher, counselor, and soccer, football, and basketball coach. We had 2 children, Allison, now 36, and Garrett, who would have been 31 in 2008. I lost my son at the age of 30 on 9 January 2008 after a long illness. I miss him everyday. My 'closure', if that exists, is to think of him and say his name each day. My daughter, a graduate of DePauw University, attended on a 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship and served her country for 6 years as an Army Chemical Officer through the rank of Captain. She is married to an Army Major and they currently live here in Colorado Springs at Fort Carson. He has seen 6 deployments and during his most recent (second with the 4th Infantry Division) in 2012, became a wounded warrior compliments of an Afgan IED. I thank God everyday for His mercy and keeping him with us. (He had already served our nation in Afganistan,Bosnia,Kosovo, and Iraq with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, NY) and has currently returned from a year long assignment in Saudi Arabia and will be assigned to the 4th Infantry Division G-3 (Operations and Training), hopefully to be non-deployed any time soon. I have been given four wonderful grand daughters: Megan, Aileen, Haley, and Emily. They are, without doubt, among the very best that has happened for me. After 15 years in the Public School systems here in Colorado Springs, we retired in May 2006 and will continue to spend our days being close to family here in Colorado and/or wherever they may be, connecting with friends, volunteering in our district schools, and traveling. Update; After 30 years living and working and retiring in Colorado Springs, we have relocated and right sized our residence. We have moved to Gulfport, Mississippi choosing to reside in a Gated Community close to Keesler AFB and other amenities. We are now closer to our daughter and her family now living in Indiana after retiring from the Army in November 2016 and have traded the mountains for the ocean, the Gul of Mexico which is not more than a kilometer from our front door. Life is good. School Attended various elementary schools in Massachussetts and Maine - Cambridge, Machias, Portland, and Bangor; 5th Street Junior High in Bangor, and Ba...Expand for more
ngor, John Bapst, and Presque Isle High Schools, graduating in 1964 from PIHS. College After graduation from high school, I worked for a year in Presque Isle, ME to "create" financial support for college. Attended Aroostook State College as a Phys Ed major from '65-'67; University of Maine - Farmington, graduating in 1969, in the field of Special Education. Attended graduate schools at the University of Maine, Orono, (M.Ed, Special Education) Catholic University, Washington D.C (M.A. Organizational Behavior and Leadership).; Chapman University, Colorado Springs, CO, (M.A. Career Counseling); and the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs for Certification & Licensurein School Counselling Additional work included 29 hours on an M.A. in Educational Leadership and Administration at CU. Workplace: As a young man, I worked as a janitor, grocery store clerk, movie usher, and clothing store clerk. My early professional career included teaching at Tapley Elementary School in Oakland, ME; serving as Director of the KVCRC Day Camp (for disabled children)in Augusta, ME; and Assistant Director and Coach for the Maine State Special Olympics in 1970. As a military officer, I commanded at the platoon, battery ( 3 line units for a total of 41 months), and battalion levels; served in the Recruiting Command in the NYC AFEES (MEPS), referred to as Alice's Restaurant directing both testing and administrative operations; was a Professional Development and Assignments Officer in the Army's Military Personnel Center, (MILPERCEN); Aide-de-Camp to a Major General in the 32d AADCOM; and a staff officer in the 3d Battalion, 4th ADA of the 82d Airborne Division and 4th Battalion, 61st ADA of 4th Infantry Division, and USSPACECOM, (Adjutant, S-1, Personnel Officer ), Operations Officer (S-3),and Director of Personnel Management for all Services at the United State Space Command on Peterson AFB. My last assignment was as the Professor of Military Science (ROTC) at the University of Maine, where ironically I was "drafted" while a graduate student in 1970! My career took us all over the United States, Europe, and Korea. In later life, retired from the military, work has included teaching students in Special Education at the high school level, counseling middle school students, and coaching both high school and middle school students in soccer, basketball, and football. It has been a great run, but after fourteen years as a teacher, counselor, and coach, retirement was achieved. The one unmet goal - to serve as an administrator (principal or assistant principal) -- will remain voluntarily unmet - and life as a professional grand parent bent on spoiling all four has commenced. Military: While attending graduate school at U Maine Orono and having had the distinction of being granted the #2 in the December 1969 draft lottery, and having received an INDUCTION letter in November 1971, I enlisted in lieu of the draft effective 20 April 71. Attended BCT, Ft. Jackson, SC; was commissioned in the Air Defense Arty, April 72, via Field Artillery OCS, Fort Sill, OK; and had tours in the USA, Korea, and Europe. Assigned to the Recruiting Command, 38th ADA Bde, 82d Airborne and 4th Infantry Divisions, 32d AADCOM, USSPACECOM, and ROTC Command. Commanded three ADA batteries in Germany and Korea and once at the battalion level; served on the Army staff at the Military Personnel Center. Served as an Aide - de - Camp; and had a number of battalion level staff assignments. Twenty one plus good years, retiring in 1992 after serving with the most incredible of people - soldiers. At the end of the day I can say without hesitation, I loved the Army and still do. Those years provided challenges and objectives much larger than self and embodied a code that I still live by today. I look back and know that I was a part of that force which rebuilt an organization shattered by an undeclared war and was on the tip of the spear that created and evolved the All Volunteer Force we know today. It was one of the best things which happened to me "by default".
