Dave's Story

Life I'm an Army Brat from way way back so, like many brats, I've been to quite a few schools. School life started out in El Paso Texas where I attended 1st grade at Ft Bliss (where my dad was stationed) Elementary. From there it was on to Zweibrucken West Germany where I attended Zweibrucken Elementary School (DODS -Department of Defense School) for the second and third grades. 4th through 6th grade were spent in Lawrence Indiana (Fort View Elementary, Crestview Elementary, Indian Creek Elementary, and Belzer Junior High) where my dad was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison. That was just a sign of things to come as we moved to Ft Monroe Virginia (by FAR the best placed I lived growing up) and I attended five more schools that took me through the middle of my junior year. Add Buckroe Beach Junior High, Benjamin Syms Junior High, C. Vernon Spratley Junior High, Pembroke High School, and Kecoughtan High School while in Virginia. My final year and a half of high school were spent at DM Therrell High School (graduating in 1973) in Atlanta Georgia where my Dad retired from Ft McPherson in 1976. After that, believe it or not, I added only one college to the list after Therrell - East Texas State University in Commerce Texas (now known as Texas A&M University at Commerce) - all-in-all, a very typical brat-life. Like all brats, I have or had many friends (all but a couple long ago lost) spread literally around the world. There are only a couple that I still keep in touch with from time to time - Teresa and Pat from our days at Ft Monroe. A few other folks I'd like to get in touch with from Ft Monroe are Ricky Price, Lonnie...Expand for more
Cox, and David Zimov. When I first got to Ft Monroe we hung out and did a lot together - most notably two versions of baseball - Curb Baseball and Tennis Court Baseball - you had to be there. Both Ricky and Lonnie were two years older than I was and over time we split up went our separate ways with folks our own age - and David Zimov was one of those. Great memories! Maybe it was the timing or the age or a combination of both, but I thoroughly enjoyed living at Ft Monroe - right on Hampton Roads not to far from the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. But I digress - after graduation from ETSU in 1978 I spent 28 years in the Air Force being stationed at places such as Robins AFB Georgia, Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio, Kelly AFB Texas, Maxwell AFB Alabama, Bristol England United Kingdom, Hanscom AFB Massachusetts, the Pentagon, Brooks AFB Texas, and finally (where I retired in November 2006), Langley AFB Virginia - back 'home' in Hampton Roads. Being a brat used to be somewhat unique with all the moving around but I suspect that more and more kids these days are moving every so often - and its not just military brats. People often ask me if I enjoyed growing up as a brat and I tell 'em in no uncertain terms - YES! While I did make and then lose a lot of friends growing up, and don't really have a 'hometown,' nothing beats the travel opportunities presented by brat-dom. Nothing. As for Debbie and I, we are now living in Williamsburg Virginia, not too far from my 'hometown.' I've enjoyed my 'retirement' since November of 06 but I'm going to go back to work eventually - and hopefully in the Hampton Roads/Peninsula area.
