David's Story

Life After graduation I attended PBJC for a semester and joined Alpha Phi Delta. Then I did a tour of Italy as a member of the musical group "Up With People" Cast C of which one of our cast members became a star (Glenn Close) known as Glenny to us. Later I Joined the Air Force from Nov 1968 - Aug 1972 as Crew Chief on C-130 aircraft in Taiwan 15 months, Viet-nam 2 months, Puerto Rico 2 years, and Germany 1 month. I Returned to the WPB area for 5 years, then in 1977 joined the Air Force Reserves in Kansas City, Mo. as a Flight Engineer on C-130s. In 1979 I participated in airlift operation in Nicaragua to evacuate U.S. citizens and embassy personnel during the hostilities with the Samosa government. Our operations were staged out of Howard AFB IN Panama. During that time I got to visit El Salvado, Honduras, and Guatamala. I Obtained my Commercial, multiengine, instrument pilot license, Flight Engineer - Turbopropeller, Airframe and Powerplant mechanic certificates during 1979 and 1980. In 1980 I began working for various airlines at various locations (Zantop, Fleming Int'l, Evergreen, Camair, Transcontinental, Southern Air Transport, etc) In 1983 I left the Kansas City area and moved to Clearfield, Utah where I worked for some of those airlines both on Hill AFB and later at the Salt Lake City International Airport. I use to spend weekends playing poker in Wendover, Nevada. It wa about a two an a half hour drive across the salt flats from Salt Lake City. Then I moved to El Paso, Tx to work for Transcontinental Airlines in 1988, I spent a couple of months working out of Larado, Texas. In 1989 I hired into the Federal Aviation Administration as an Aviation Safety Inspector at the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) Flight Standards District Office at DFW Airport, Texas. I was assigned to various certificates held by the office. For 4 years 1992-1996 I was assigned to the International unit and had oversight of all Mexican Airlines that operated to the US from Mexico and Repair Stations located in Mexico that worked on U.S. Aircraft. For a short while I worked in the Geographic Unit (surveillance of all U.S. Airlines operating into DFW Airport). Then in 1998 I was assigned to duties involving oversight of Mesa Airlines, and presently have been assigned to management of the American Airlines certificate since October of 1999. I have been single (Divorced) since 1994 and have no children of my own. I do have several stepchildren and a 6 year old grandaughter and 2 year old Grandson in Arizona that I visit often. I like country music and dancing, and recently decided to learn to play the fiddle(violin) after I hand carved one from scratch. I also enjoy bass fishing and occassionally enter Bass touraments at Lake Fork. In 2005 I decided to build my own custom chopper, so I did. For the record, my wife and I remained very close friends since our divorce and finally we spent a few months together again in 2001. She had remarried a person from her home town of Marana, Arizona around 1999 or 2000 and he seemed to verbally abuse her and he drank all the time. She left him and filed for divorce and since we had been friends for so long I went and picked her u...Expand for more
p and moved her back to Texas. A few months later when the divorce was to be final she felt guilty and decided to give him one more chance, s oshe went back to Arizona. I would see her when I would visit our daughter and her family over the next 2 years. When she had returned to him he was OK for a month or so then went back to drinking and abusing her. We kept in touch and on February 14, 2003, she called me to say happy valintines and we talked. Things were not going well and she said he was acting stranger when he drank, which was all the time. She had moved sometime ago into a spare room and was looking for a job so she could afford to move out. She had gotten new divorce papers drawn up and had showed them to him. On February 18, 2003 she was found dead at her home. Well, it's been a while now and I guess I have come to terms with her death. I will never forget her and I'm still the father for her children and we are pretty close and always will be, even though the oldest Chris and his family now lives in Colorado and Danielle and her family live in Arizona. It's now November 2008 and I'm still alone and wish I had someone to share life with. Guess, if its meant to be, then I'll meet someone special. Until then... I just keep busy with work. Checking in March 7, 2009. Well, I'm another year older as of January 12th. 61 pretty good years. Some good and some maybe not so good I guess, but that's life. Ya just have to take what you're delt, like it or not. Well, this year I lost my mom on January 17th. She had been in a nursing home for almost 3 years and had been suffering a lot of pain near the end when she was admitted into a hospice. I think it was good she didn't have to die in pain. They were really good to her there. She was 83 years old. My dad will be 86 in July and he's still doing pretty good, but age is slowing him down some. It's sad to watch people that were quite sharp and smart as age forces them to lose their sharpness. I guess some days I don't feel as sharp as I once was either, but I still love learning new things. Lifes about learning and trying to do your best inspite of everything else. I'm still fighting the Airlines and our own FAA management trying to make the airlines a safe place. But, after 20 years now of fighting my own management, I'm beginning to think about retirement. I always said, if you ever give up fighting for the public as a government employee, then it's time to retire. I guess I'm getting burnt out and getting tired of trying. The inspectors are great and try to keep aviation safe, but for some reason, FAA management in the end supports the big money operators that have already cut to many corners saving money. I don't even like to fly any more. The more I see, the more I just want to get away from aviation. Don't be surprised if as a last ditch effort, you don't see me up on the hill testifying to Congressman Oberstar. I have been saying for the past year, I am so angry I just may go to Washington yet, before I retire. At least some in Washington are still talking to me, so in the mean time, I will keep trying to make aviation safety the best I can, ad the hell with politics.
