David's Story
Life
David X. Cifu, M.D. is a Board-Certified academic physiatrist with areas of interest in neurologic rehabilitation (brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, ParkinsonÂs disease), geriatrics, arthritis and hip fracture, function and outcome assessment, and evidence-based medicine. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the 6-Year Combined B.A./M.D. Program at Boston University in 1986. He then completed a Transitional Medicine internship and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston) in 1990. He joined the Department of PM&R at Baylor as an Assistant Professor for one year, and then relocated to VCU/MCV in 1991 as the Director of Rehabilitation Consultation Services within the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. He became The Herman J. Flax, M.D. Professor with Tenure and Chairman of the Department of PM&R in 1999 and Chief of PM&R Services for the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in 2002. He is responsible for the fiscal and administrative operations of the 25-person, $5 million/year Department of PM&R. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of PM&R as a member-at-large since 2001, and as Treasurer 2003. He was a member of the AAPM&R Study Guide sub-committee from 1993 to the present and chair from 1998-2001. He has more than $14 million in grant funding and is the co-Principal Investigator on two NIDRR grants, one NIH grant, one VHS grant and has funding on 3 others. He has published more than 165 articles and abstracts, produced 11 book chapters, and presented more than 300 presentations in all areas of PM&R. He serves on a variety of regional and national committees promoting academic PM&R and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.
