David's Story

Life 1987 was the end of an era and the beginning of an age of exploration. After Mark Thornsley and I hiked through the Denali wilderness in Alaska I knew I had a bad case of wanderlust. I returned back to Scandinavia with my good friend Kenny Brook. We cycled from Oslo, Norway to Copenhagen, Denmark by way of the Swedish Archipelago...two crazy young men bicycling through the land of the Vikings. After several other adventures down Baja I tried taming myself by returning to school. I moved up to Santa Barbara to prepare to enter into UCSB. 1991 came around and I found myself making a decision that changed the course of my life. I entered the NAVY in JULY. My specialty was as a Search and Rescue Swimmer and Helicopter Crewchief/Naval Aircrewman. I Trained in Pensacola, FL then returned to San Diego for 2 years of Active Duty before transferring to the Naval Reserves. Back in the civilian world I returned to school and trained in the Emergency Medical Technician field. I became a Paramedic, moved up to San Luis Obispo where I began working for Pismo Beach Fire Department. In 2001 I was hired by Los Angeles City Fire Department as a firefighter/paramedic. I continued to work in the Naval Reserves with a helicopter squadron based in Point Mugu, Ventura. The command would soon be tasked with supporting Special Operations in Iraq in 2003 and 2005. While serving in Iraq I built up the command flight medic program, providing casualty evacuation for special forces units. On Se...Expand for more
ptember 16, 2006 I advanced to Chief Petty Officer. At Los Angeles City Fire Department I work as a firefighter/paramedic, training with the Swift Water Rescue Team and Urban Search and Rescue. I recently bought and moved onto my boat in Ventura, CA. She is a sturdy 41ft Egg Harbor Motor Yacht proudly named "Chief's Pride". My solitude comes when I take off for the Channel Islands, anchored in a cove, looking back at the Los Angeles basin, feeling absolutely thankful to be in such a beautiful place. ~~For those who have come to my profile and are curious, thank you...be well, and I look forward to seeing you at the Reunion. School Simply, I would not change a thing. Good times, bad times, all were building blocks in their own mysterious way to shaping who I am today and who I will become. Inspired with the gift of choice, it is not what becomes of us that is important, it is what and how we choose that defines us, making us such magnificent beings. One of the many inspirational teachers would be Mr Cummings...His life was to inspire us with history. To know where we are going by learning where we have been. Understanding quirky tolerance because of Mr Babcock's changing hair color. Wondering if Mrs Sharp really ever did make out with...ummm...you know who. And so it starts...contemplations of years gone by with new insights of a matured and wise mind. Did you ever guess back in 1987 that you would be who you are today? I am looking forward to hearing your story.
