Life I have been teaching elementary school for 34 years. While I was a student at Englewood, I worked for the Chicago Public Library. I worked there for over seven years. I have 2 Masters Degrees, one in Elem. Ed. and the other in Administration and Supervision. I still live in the Woodlawn community by choice and am very active in the community. I was President of the West Woodlawn Council of Block Clubs from 1991-1999,I have been a Beat facilitaor for C.A.P.S. Beat 321 since 1993,District Advisory Council Chairperson since 2000, Chicago Teachers Union Delegate for over 20 years, served on many committees for the Union, I was an Elementary Functional Vice President for the Chicago Teachers Union,in 2005 I was elected a Vice President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, I served on the Executive Board of the Union and The New United Progressive Caucus, served on the original pilot Local School Council in 1987 and served as teacher rep. for the LSC, and served as a member of the Parkway Community House Board of Directors from 1999-2003. I have received numerous awards in community service as well as in the field of education. I belong to The Carter G. Woodson Association for the Study of African American History, Phi Delta Kappa, and many other organizations. I believe that all things are possible for those who believe in God and people should give back to the community whenever possible. In November 2010 I retired from the Chicago Public Schools after a 34 year career. I am now enjoying my retirement in a new home and plan to do some traveling. Since 2006 I have been the Assistant Principal of Bret Harte Elementary School. In November 010 I retired from The Chicago Public Schools after 34 years. School I attended A.O. Sexton school for grades Kindergarten and half of 1st grade, I then transfered to James McCosh for grades 1 through 8, then I attended Englewood high school, after graduating in 1972, I attended Kennedy King College. I graduated with an Associates in Arts Degree in 1975, then I attended Chicago State University graduating in 1977 with a Bachelors in Science Degree in Elementary Education. After being out of school for 20 years, I went to Graduate School at CSU in 1997. I received a Masters of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1999. I enjoyed the experience so much, I decided to continue with another Graduate program. I received a Masters in Arts Degree in Administration and Supervision in 2001. College I attended Kennedy King College in the fall of 1972. At first I was not impressed with college life. Then, in the Spring of 1973 I took some pyshcology and history classes and my whole attitude changed. I enjoyed my years at Kennedy King. To be able to plan my daily schedule was cool. I have told my students that those people who dropout of high school are missing the best part of their education. College is the BOMB! Before I knew it I had to make decisions about furthering my schooling. I knew that I wanted to teach, so I applied for admision to Chicago State University. I graduated from Kennedy King in August 1975 and started at CSU that same month. I was admitted to the College of Education in Sept. I enjoyed my times at CSU. I thought about joining a fraternity but decided against it. Coach Buckhalter wanted me to join the basketball team but I was working and could not fit that into my schedule. I regret both decisions. I made many friends at CSU. I s...Expand for more
tarted my student teaching in January 1977 and I enjoyed that experience. I taught top group 7th graders and 4th grade. My cooperating teachers were Melanie Howard and Martha Martin and my coordinator was Mary Dunn. It is frightening to do your student teaching because you wonder, what if I don't like teaching or can not handle the challenge. Well, Miss Dunn offered great encouragement and she told me that I was a natural and that I should sell myself to the principal (put my best foot forward). I always have done that and I must say that I have had a wonderful teaching experience. I graduated from CSU in August 1977 and began teaching shortly after that. I wanted to make some money so I did not go back to school. As a matter of fact, it was 20 years before I went back to school to get my masters. I forgot how exciting school was. My first masters was in Elementary Education. My experiences helped to make this program exciting. Interacting with my peers was a great experience. I graduated in 1999 and moved right into my 2nd masters this time in Administration and Supervision. This program was just as exciting as the first one. The professors were excellent. I graduated in 2001. I thought about taking an administrative position but I love my summer vacations. I have not worked during the summer since 1977. In 2006 I accepted an Assistant Principal position at Harte. Workplace I started working at 16 for the Chicago Public Library, first, at the Avalon Branch and then at the Jeffery Manor Sub Branch. I worked for the Library system from July 1970 til February 1978. I was selected to coordinate the library shelves for the new (1977) Avalon Branch. Similutaniously I began teaching at the D.S. Wentworth Elem. school in October 1977. I served under the leadership of John Jackson and Effie McHenry. In the fall of 1978 I was transfered to the Marquette Elem. school under the leadership of Dorothy Hogan. I served there until my original appointment in January 1982 to the Herman Raster. I fail to recall any leadership there. Happily I became a (supernumerary), a displaced teacher, and I was truly blessed to be appointed to the staff at Edgebrook Elem. school in September 1982 under the leadership of Arthur Fumarolo and later Dr. Diane Maciejewski. I remained there til June 2001. In September 2001, I transfered to my present school Bret Harte under the leadership of Michael Keno. In September 2004 I was selected to be the Lead Literacy Teacher for the Intermediate grades. I have met many friends over these 34 years and I cherish these work experiences. I recently had my 50th birthday celebration and many of my present and former colleagues were in attendance. I have been a member of the Chicago Teachers Union since 1977. In September 1982 I was elected to serve in the House of Delegates. In 1986 I was elected as a Delegate to the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers. I have served on many committees under the leadership of Bob Healy, Jackie Vaughan, Thomas Reese, Debbie Lynch and currently Marilyn Stewart. In February 2005 I was elected to the Executive Board of the Illinois Federation of Teachers as a Vice President. I look forward to continue serving the great members of this wonderful profession. People ask me when do I plan to retire, I will retire when God gives me the message to do so. And God gave methe message this year and I am enjoying my retirement.
