David's Story

I plan to edit as new thoughts come to mind - my old 286 type processor is very, very, slow these days. Update 8-6-12. Issue: Senior "Whing-Ding" and Nancy Hart. Update 9-27-12. Issue: Other student cars I remember at BHS. Update 12-9-12. Issue: Correct some found typos and add info for clarification. Update 1 -1-18: 2014 - We spent three months touring Europe, 8-20-16 we were blessed with our first grandchild at our young age of 71, and in 2017 we spent four months continuing our history & sociology lesson in Europe. Where to begin? I guess the best place to start is by saying that I owe some dedicated high school teachers for a pretty great life. A little reading , writing, and arithmetic (with some fun science thrown in) at BHS sure provided me with a nice, strong, foundation for the last 49 plus years. Of course it took a long time for some of that foundation to solidify. I personally thank the following BHS teachers for their dedication, hard work, and putting up with me as I was frequented invited to sit at the front of the class so they could keep an eye on me - and it was for good reasons: English - Mr. Shealor, Mrs. Doe, Mr. Hutchings, and Mr. Ringler. They had their hands full trying to get through to this hard headed, wise cracking, country boy (half Okie). I remember Mr. Hutchings saying, "When arguing with an idiot, make sure he is not similarly occupied". I haven't always followed his admonition, but I try. Mr. Ringler gave us, what must have been, a very tough test near the end of our senior year, and because of some strange shift in the cosmos, I received the highest grade "B" given on the test. Everyone else did lousy no "C's", a few "D's", and the rest were "F's". Guess what? He threw the results of the test out and decided to retest at a later date. I was pissed! However, knowing Mr. Ringler, I am sure he took that single shining performance on my part into account when giving me my final grade. I did OK, especially for me in an English class. Math/Science/Mechanical Drawing - Miss McLean, Mr. Koegler, Mr. Nystrom, Mr. Kirkpatrick, Mr. Lang, Mr. Goodban. Loved geometry (Koegler), forces, vectors, and still enjoy their applications in the shop, sailing, and everyday life. Mr. Kirkpatrick (LCDR Navy Reserve) loved explosions. That is probably how he lost his hair, and I am sure it helped cause some of Mr. Lang's (Physics and Department Chair) grey hair. Kirkpatrick exploded everything from natural gas in gallon paint cans to hydrogen in soap bubbles and tape wrapped coke bottles. He even dropped a chunk of potassium (K) in a beaker filled with water that resulted in an explosion that shot flames almost to the ceiling of the science lecture room. Mr. Lang was there in seconds and he was greeted with a four foot layer smoke hugging the ceiling. It was spectacular! Mr. Kirkpatrick (Chemistry) also declared that Lorraine Gardner had the sweetest mouth in the class based on litmus tests. She was a sweet, and beautiful, young lady! Mr. Goodban (Mechanical Drawing) had extreme difficulty seeing so he used his fingernail to help judge line quality on drawings. Do not think for a single minute that his assessment was incorrect, because I tried to convince him otherwise, and I know he was right. Mr. Goodban showed me that there is more than one way to assess an issue and still come to the correct conclusion. On the wall behind his desk he had a framed, freehand, house drawing in gold ink, by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was amazingly beautiful. Spanish - Miss Burk and Mrs. Chenoweth. - . I must thank them a lot as they helped make several of our vacations (even our Honeymoon) to Mexico, and Central America absolutely wonderful. I still study Spanish before, during, and after our trips south; and, my Spanish/English dictionary has severely frayed corners. I remember the first day of Spanish when Jim Dalley came into Mrs. Chenoweth's class a little late and sat down. Mrs. Chenoweth asked, "Senior Dally, que hora es (What time is it)?" to which Jim promptly replied with a straight face, "Tengo quince anos (I am 15 years old)." Everyone laughed and the class seemed to always have a light hearted and fun tone thereafter. Jim had her class the year, or the semester, before and he seemed to be one of her great frustrations. It was great having Jim in the class because it kept me well below her radar: and, I was able to keep my seat in the middle of the class. I will have to give Jim a call to see if he can attend the reunion. Admin and Football/PE - Fred Robinson, Ken Robesky, and Earl Sargent. Fred Robinson and Ken Robesky for their supporting roles to make sure I received needed medical treatment for a broken nose (baseball in P.E.) and an injured leg in football. The nose healed after being set by the doctor (although not as straight as it once was), and the knee is a little quirky as I get older. Mr. Sargent would always say, "Spit on it" when someone would get hurt and start bleeding. He was so consistent that most of us in his PE class, or football, picked up on the phrase. He was really a nice guy. Kate Nikkel reminded me of our fantastic all night Senior Party - the "Whing -Ding". There must be pictures somewhere in an archive. I thought the party had the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. K8 - maybe there was something in that punch because records show that Al Anthony was the MC and the groups were: the Illusions, the Ivy Clansmen, the Cherry Creek Singers, and that 1962 upstart group, the Beach Boys. The four groups rotated throughout the night between BHS, South High, North High, and Garces High, so that one of the groups was at every school for most of the night. It was awesome. The all night party included a buffet dinner and the whole thing cost $1.00 per ticket. What a great time, and I still have the table cloth that we wrote notes to our dates on all night. Guys - do not tell the girls what a "cheap" date they used to be. Some time around 5 a.m. my date and I decided to take that new Highway 58...Expand for more
freeway up toward Tehachapi to watch the sun rise. What a wonderful experience for teens to cherish. How lucky we are! Immediately after graduation and the Whing-Ding, I moved with my parents to Visalia. It was just up 99 from Bakersfield, so I was able to visit my best friend, Glenn Spence, and go to Stan's for a "REAL" cherry coke (the best ever) while visiting and talking with BHS classmates and other high school friends. One summer evening Nancy Hart was cruising through Stans, with a girlfriend - Marie Thompson, in her parents (I hope) huge Caddy; and a friend of Glenn Spence ran and dove through the open rear window. His antics earned me my first ever ride in a Cadillac. I would have loved an opportunity to ride in the 300 SL Mercedes, or Facel Vega, that Nancy frequently drove to school. Poor girl, but nicer than anyone would ever imagine. I'm sad to see her move to Chapala - if what I heard is true. Other cars I remember from school: I think it was Marin Jourdan who had an absolutely beautiful '40 Ford. It was perfect and would be considered so today. Dave Stewart had a really fast '50 or '51 Chevy with a nice small block V8 that was fun at the drags. I think it was George Olney who had a monster '58 Pontiac that was also fast at the drags. The engine must have been huge to push that monster as fast as it did. I also remember Jan Janes showing me the blue '53 Packard that her folks gave her for school. Apparently it survived a couple of Janes kids. It was a perfect car for teenagers and would keep them safe. If you could parallel park that thing, you would have no problems passing any driving test. Great job Jan! I started my very lengthy college education in Visalia at The College of the Sequoias while working at the local Richfield gas station (ARCO these days) in the evening and on weekends. College seemed to take forever while working, dropping classes due to changing shifts, and getting drafted. During my second semester at COS, I was convinced I needed to get a real job so I applied at the phone company. I took the test and felt I had aced it - not a feeling I was used to while taking tests in high school. I guess I did pretty well because I was one of three to be interviewed out of the sixty tested. I told my future boss during the interview that I planned to continue my education as soon as I could get a shift which would enable me to go back to school. I dropped my classes at COS, and went to work for Ma Bell a couple of weeks later. After a little more than a year with Ma Bell on evenings and going to COS during the day, I was drafted and ended up spending one year, ten months and 16 days in the Navy during Viet Nam before I got an early out to return to school. How lucky can one guy be? Thanks to the great foundation I received at BHS, the help of Ma Bell, and the infinite support, love, and hard work of my wonderful wife, Shirley, we (Shirley and I) finally completed my degree at Fresno State while working full time and going to school. I almost finished my Masters, including classes, thesis approval and data gathering, when Ma Bell decided it was time to see if I had what it takes to be a Telecommunications Manager, and they really put me to work. I was given great jobs working with wonderful people throughout my career. We moved from Visalia to Fresno/Clovis for school and work. Shirley moved from the Tulare County Office of Education to work at Fresno State while I moved with Ma Bell and continued my education at what was by then CSU Fresno. In 1986, we moved to Placerville and I worked in Sacramento and throughout the State until I retired in 1996. We purchased a 5th wheel and truck and have traveled throughout North America and some of Mexico. In 2000, Shirley retired from the El Dorado County Office of Education, we sold our home in Placerville and went looking for a place to live. We finally found 2 1/2 acres on a small river in a cool area of Oregon (Shirley likes cool weather and I still like the valley heat), and we built a new home and shop for me to play in. It is so beautiful here, we frequently wonder why we would want to go elsewhere for travel and a vacation. However, we go, visit, enjoy immensely, eat too much, and return to our "Green Gables" and paradise. Shirley and I have a son and daughter-in-law; but, no grandchildren to spoil and send home to their mom and dad wound as tight as a grandfather's pocket watch on monday morning. SEE UPDATES BELOW!!! The last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to help a friend move his Nordhavn motorsailer up and down the Pacific from Alaska to Panama. He now has it on the east coast and I will probably help him move it to, and around, the Mediterranean. We are truly blessed with good educations (thanks to those dedicated teachers at BHS), good health, great friends, and a beautiful country; and, we are having the time of our life. After 1963 BHS 50 year reunion: In 2014 we spent three wonderful months in Europe where we visited England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Monaco, Malta, Spain, Central Mediterranean cruise, Gibraltar, Tangier, and Tenerife/Gozo. We had friends, and some BHS '63 classmates with us for about a month. What a great time to be with friends and it was a wonderful opportunity to visit the sites and really learn about some of the world history we were exposed to at BHS. It was awesome. Thanks for joining us Diane and Hal Bert. :-) August 20th, 2016 we were blessed with our very first grandchild, Sophie Marie. It has really helped us understand that God provides us with our greatest blessings when they are the most meaningful and will have the greatest impact on our lives. Amen is all I can say! In 2017 we returned to Europe for four months and expanded our touring into the Alps areas of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany as well as Hungary, A Greek Island Cruise and Portugal. This time we slowed down enough (with friends and relatives) to really get a sense of the wonderful social aspects of European Societies along with their magnificent history. We loved it.

Never miss an opportunity to visit a Costco because you never know what you will find - like a stand up paddle board large enough for the whole family, and a whole leg of prosciutto complete with wooden and steel hanger and
Beautiful duck breast appetizer with a fusion of wonderful flavors from Resto - a treat from the Chef. Yummm!!!

Hallgrimskirkja Church with Leif Erickson - a gift from the US. The church is 74.5 meters high (about 250').
Lamb to fellow starters of the best soup ever and garlic sauteed scallops topped with langoustine and a dessert of your choice - yes I have gained weight like crazy.
This is one of the very best restaurants we have every visited. And, it was just luck because we were able to walk to it from our HomeAway location. Yummmm!
Hallgrimskirkja Church - it is the intrusion on the horizon.
Very clear river/Silfra fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at one end of Thingvellir Lake. At times scuba diving is possible. Sometimes it is too hot or too cold.
Panoramic photo of Eurasian - North American tectonic plates through Iceland taken from west side. East side of rift is now near the mountains on the horizon. Moving apart about 1" per year.
Geyser adjacent to original Geysir from which the term comes. Active about every 5-8 minutes. There are several steam vents in the area.
Pale blue, hot, pool adjacent to clear pool. They are even hooked together at top right of photo.
Very hot, clear pool near original "Geysir" geyser.
The long trip begins. A twelve hour drive from Rome to Baveria and Oberstaufen. We will fill in the lapses between Iceland/UK and Germany later. Thus the "I" (Italia) license plate.
