David's Story

Life It's been a long time since highschool. In the Fall of '65 went to West Texas in Canyon and managed to stay there for 3 years before getting drafted. Went to Army for 3 years (Oct.'68 to Oct.'71). Got married to Diane Bagwell(Dumas girl)in '68, and had a daughter that is now 40. Drafted, married, and a baby, all within the span of about a year. After service came back to Panhandle of Texas(Amarillo)to finish college at West Texas and went into the Insurance and Financial Planning business in 1973. Still doing the same thing. Had a son in 1980, now 29. Eleven years apart for kids shows you that I didn't learn a lot in school, but the practice was fun, HA!! Love to play golf and do it often. I'm told that I live in the past at times, but some of the best times I have had in my life were in Dumas, Texas growing up and going to school at North Ward, then Junior High, and High School. Sports, fun activities with buds and girl friends and generally killing time dragging "Main street", plus all the dances and Friday nights at the YMCA, pool shooting, swimming pool fun, eating at the 287 Cafe late at night, working at the old Smelter, farming for Eldon Cluck; drinking some beer way to young with all of my old "Cactus Rat" buds like Gary King, Hulon Kirkland, Danny Killins, Harold Bradley and others like Jim Shaha, Ricky Burgess, Lawrence Thomas, Randall Harris, Norman Bonner, and others. Dragging "Main" with the likes of Robert Houlette, Don Samuels, Ronnie Smith, Dub Harris, Charlie Jameson, Clyde Gregory, "Wolf", and several others that were older. Yes, I had a great time in Dumas growing up so I would do it all over again in a heart-beat. Holler at me sometime and we can lie to each other over the internet, HA! Dave School Lived on Pine Street about a block and a half from North Ward School, as it was called in the days we attended. Went to Junior High as did everyone in Dumas when they got to that point for the 7th through 9th grades. Always had a lot of fun in grade school, except all the "licks" I got from teachers and the principal and in Junior High pretty much the same. Liked school, liked most all my teachers, and seeing all my friends everyday and playing sports. Worked for 7th grade Arts and Crafts teacher,Howard Coulter,on week ends helping paint signs while in Junior High and worked at the swimming pool as a "basket boy" during summers of 7th and 8th grades. Loved that job cause got to see all the "little chickies" in bathing suits everyday. That was big for a kid age 13 or so back then. High School from Sept'62 to May'65 was one of the best times in my life. Didn't like studying that much, but to be around all your friends, have all the fun, play sports and all the fun ...Expand for more
that went along with that, the dating, parking with your date and necking or whatever, (drive inn movies, ah--great), dancing at the old YMCA, dragging Main, eating at the old 287 Cafe, going to the swimming pool during the summer, etc.; "beam me back Scotty"!!! For many it was a great time in our lives and I'd do it all over again. College Went to West Texas State in Canyon in Fall of 1965 (after high school)to stay out of the military. Went to school and drove back and forth to Dumas every weekend to work at the Smelter (American Zinc plant)during school and in the summers to pay my way to school. Really disliked that, but was means to an end. Had "MUCH" fun at college. Lived with Wayne Walton,Clyde Gregory, and Larry Lewis (all Dumas boys) at different times as roommates. Went to a bunch of parties, had a lot of fun, didn't study near enough and my grades reflected that. Finally got bad enough that I got drafted into the Army in October of 1968 and college and all the "FUN" was gone for 3 years. Came back to Amarillo in Fall of 1971, started back to school in Spring of 1972 and finally got my Marketing Degree in May of 1973. When I got back to school, there were some of my "fraternity buds" (Phi Delta Theta) still there (going on 6-8 years). Talk about kids going to college for a "career"!!--literally, HA!! Wonder if they allow early-60 age guys to live in the co-ed dorms today???, just thinking . . . .HAHA!!!, I'm receptive if they are . . Workplace Started in the Life Insurance business in June of 1973 after getting out of the Army in Oct/'71 and finally finishing my Marketing degree at West Texas State in Canyon. Have been in Amarillo all that time, 37 years. Was with Equitable Life of New York (now AXA Advisors)for 23 years before leaving them in July of 1996. More independent now, but affliated with American National Insurance Company for select products and broker with other companies too. Continue to do insurance, securities, and investments for individuals and businesses. Not sure if I will actually "retire" as some do. Many think that I have been retired for years, HA!!! What do they know?? Military Got drafted in October of 1968 due to messing around and partying to much in college at West Tesas State in Canyon. Went to El Paso on the "rock", as they called it, for basic training at Logan Heights. Got in Air Defense, Hawk Missiles, when got out of basic training. Went overseas in 1969 for 15 months, got back to El Paso November of 1970 and instructed in Missile school for remainder of hitch. Got out October of 1971 and came back to Amarillo to finish college at West Texas and figure out what I was going to do in my life to earn a living for the wife and daughter I had.
