David's Story
Life
I am a patent and trademark attorney and Baylor Law School professor (25/16 years, respectively). At the last minute, I detoured from medical school to law school. But, it was not a waste - the science training for med school gave me the requisites for patent law post-law school.
Priscilla and I have been married now for 32 years (yes, 32) and have two kids - Hillary - recently married and living in D.C., and David II, a senior in college.
We spent 14 years away from the Waco area, but the combination of my teaching at Baylor, and wanting to get back out of big cities led to our return in 1998. Before moving back, I simply flew into town on teaching days, and would fly back home afterwards. This didn't make much sense after thinking about it, because the teaching and other BU involvements were both the most important activities to me, and the only things that had a single, fixed geographical base.
One of my favorite activities (outside of family, teaching and mentoring college students) happens to also be my best business tool - flying. I currently fly a twin engine 310 to all of my private practice projects from coast-to-coast and use my Cessna 172 (smaller, single engine plane) for "short hops." This al...Expand for more
lows me to live ANYWHERE, and still carry on an international patent and trademark practice (something usually reserved to the MAJOR cities). The rest of my story (for what it's worth) can be glimpsed at DOUBLE U DOUBLE U DOUBLE U DOT PILOTATLAW DOT COM (I had to write the web address this way or Classmates blocks it, for some reason).
I wish everyone well, and would love to hear from anyone and everyone.
Best regards,
David
College
I was pre-med at Baylor until the very end. Priscilla, by that time, had a pretty good job with Baylor, and we didn't really have the money to move for med school. So, at the last minute, I switched to law school. That combination of schools led to what I do today. Because of working to support school, I graduated in '82 from undergrad and '85 from law school (should have been two years earlier).
My years at BU were/are the happiest of my life. I would re-live any of them in a heart beat. Whether as a wide-eyed student then, or a surrogate dad to hundreds of students now, I can't think of a situation in which I could be happier. It's always a juggling act to balance the Baylor stuff (volunteer) with the private practice that pays the bills, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
