Classmates Profile David Hicks (JBHS Class ’71) Hi Guys, obviously a huge amount of years have gone by from when we left JBHS to now, and most of us from the early 70’s era are either approaching the official retirement age or like myself have already retired from full time paid employment. Here’s a brief outline of my career path and experiences since leaving school in 1971, and by joining Classmates, hope to find out where some of you guys are today and how your careers and lives progressed 1976 Completed an electrical fitter/mechanic trade apprenticeship at Kogarah TAFE and Electrical Engineering Certificate by 1978 to work as an Electrical Contractor. Also completed courses in Refrigeration and management. Self employed at times and also engaged by various companies on high-rise building HVAC motor controls, DDC systems, lighting and power installations mostly throughout the Sydney and North Sydney CBD. Left the trade when I was around 32 and commenced a career path in high rise building engineering /construction and operations management. Managing portfolios of properties for major Agencies, also Senior Facilities Manager for Stockland, and Engineering/Operations Manager for Australand, NSW and QLD were the major roles over the last 20 years. Last role before retirement was Head of Engineering and Operations at Town Hall Square in the CBD. Voluntarily retired now 3 years and main interests are family life, boating and fishing, music (Bass gu...Expand for more
itar and Lap Steel) and still a keen orchid enthusiast Back in 1976 married Ursula (Frahm) who attended Jannali Girls High until 1970, and we still reside in Sutherland. We have 2 sons Ray (35) and Phill (33) who both have successful careers in IT. Ray and his partner Clare have just produced our first grand daughter Emma, now I do feel old when they refer to me as ‘Grandad” Apart from a few minor issues, am still in reasonable health at 65 and looking forward to staying above ground for many years yet. Was just thinking back the other day about our time at JBHS, the diverse characters of the guys, and the teachers, most would be gone now, can’t remember much about what they taught us, but do have fond memories of the weekend house parties, the music, the alcohol,(the hair!) it’s a wonder any of us made it! Ah the 70’s I remember years 11 &12, I was so keen to study and secure a career as a Geologist, alas just ended up a hobby. I did go to Lightning Ridge though and dig for black opals, but unfortunately no fortune found. There were some pretty good academic and sporting achievers from that School Pete Spies coming back as Principal is a great example and John Dyson playing cricket for Australia to name a couple that come to mind. I know many of you guys completed trades and many went on to Uni and to secure professional careers, would be very interesting to find out a little bit about your life experiences. families and career paths Cheers David
