David's Story

Life I worked the summer after graduating from Holston High in 1963. That September Ben Donaldson and I joined the Air Force together. After basic training, he went to Elmendorff AFB, Alaska, and I went to Lincoln AFB in Lincoln, Nebraska. Hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. I stayed there through December 1965. In January 1966, I was sent to Thailand and was stationed at a base near Cambodia. I was there the entire year of 1966. Because of being stationed in a combat zone and at a remote base, I was able to choose my next base. I chose McCoy AFB in Orlando, FL. I had to extend my 4 year enlistment in order to go to another base, otherwise I would have been discharged at the port when I got back to the states. I didn't want to come back from the boonies into the real world, so I extended my stay in the Air Force. While in Thailand, I was promoted to the rank of SGT, which is as far as I got. I was ready for my next promotion when it came time for me to get out. They tried to get me to stay. I told them that if my name was on the promotion list before my time was up that I would stay. It wasn't, so I did't stay. My supervisor, a Tech Sgt, told me that I would never make it on the outside. He said that I would probably be pumping gas. That was before self service. Well, I never did pump gas, except my own. After leaving the Air Force, I came back to Knoxville and started looking...Expand for more
for a job. It took me a month and a half to find one. I started working for Alcoa on November 27, 1967. I've been there ever since then. That has been about 38-1/2 years now. I spent my first 30 years doing various jobs in the Accounting Department. I was a Staff Accountant when they "downsized" and moved my job to Pittsburgh. I ended up in the Computer Department, also called the IT Deptartment and now the IS Department. I guess somebody can't make up their mind. I now handle Telecommunications for our plants in Tennessee and Indiana. It keeps me pretty busy, but I enjoy the work more than I did Accounting. They would have to drag me back to Accounting now that I found there is life outside of that department. I could retire now, but I am going to stay a while longer. It is good to know that I could go whenever I want to. That makes a big difference. I almost forgot one important thing. I got married on Valentine's Day in 1969. I picked a day that would be hard to forget. I have been married to the same woman since 1969. That is amazing these days. We have one daughter, who is 31, and one granddaughter who will be 2 years old on August 3, 2006. We will be there for her birthday party. It is a 7 hour drive to my daughter's house in Linton, Indiana, but it is well worth the long drive. I guess that's about it. I could write a book, but I have probably bored you enough already. David
