David's Story

I continue to reside in Ohio, enjoying bass fishing, golf and lay pastoral care. Esther's health precludes travel at this time. Oldest grandson graduated from Texas A&M and is a 2nd Lt. in USAF.. Eldest granddaughter is a Junior in the Corps at Texas A&M. Our next younger granddaughter is a Freshman at U of Colorado Denver. And youngest is a Freshman in HS in Colorado. Life is good and this year will be 56 years with the same beautiful women! Sorry to miss our 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 Reunions and planned to attend our 60th prior to its postponement to Sept 24th, 2022. Hope to see you next year. I did have a BLAST at our 50th PLHS Reunion in SD in 2011! * We had 125+ for the Friday Ice Breaker * We had 225+ for the Saturday Main Event * Everyone who took the PLHS Tour enjoyed seeing the school & the changes. * Sunday Brunch was wonderful to say Goodbyes * 2 DVDs will be available (see pl61.com for more information) Short Version of My Story - * Graduated from PLHS in '61 * Graduated from SDSC in '65 (Accounting) * Married Esther in '65 * Worked at FedMart Accounting Dept. * Joined USAF in '67, retired 22+ years later. * Worked as a consultant for 11 years * Retired now - fish, golf, do volunteer work * Since 1961 ** Lived in six countries ** Lived in six states ** Married to same woman for 50 years ** Fathered three children ** Have four grandchildren. Oldest is now an Eagle Scout (third generation) ** Biggest fish - 51" Muskie ** Biggest Bass - 10 lb 11 oz (27" long) ** Lowest golf score - 79 LONG Version of My Story - After PLHS graduation, I attended SDSC and graduated with a BS in Accounting. Met Esther Blaylock, who was attending Cal Western, at church and we were married in 1965. First job was with FedMart Corp. Accounting in Kearny Mesa. Took a leave of absence to enter the Air Force and left San Diego it seams for good. Officer Training School OTS) in Texas, Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course (AMOC) in Illinois, Field Training Detachment Commander & Field Maintenance Officer (B-52s) in New Hampshire. We loved New Hampshire and our first son was born there. I was selected to attend the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Ohio and graduated with an MS in Military Logistics. It was straight to Vietnam next as Field Maintenance Supervisor (F-4Cs). During my Vietnam tour, my daughter was born in California, and I was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. After Vietnam, we lived in Florida where our second son was born. Three assignments during this tour as Field Maintenance Supervisor, Squadron Chief of Maintenance and Deputy Wing Chief of Maintenance (for 11 different aircraft MDS types). Off to Alabama after being selected for the faculty of Squadron Officer's School (SOS). This was a great assignment of 80+ hour weeks: preparing stage lectures, grading writing assignments and Field Training Exercises. We made many friends in this 3 1/2 years tour. Now back to Ohio to work in weapon system acquisition. I worked as an Acquisition Logistics Project Officer for the STS (Space Shuttle), E-4B (Alternate Command Post), AFSATCOM (Air Force Satellite Communications System) and MEECAN 661A (Low Frequency Communications). Sometimes you volunteer and sometimes you are volunteered. I was volunteered to be the Executive Officer for our Major General (2-star, Deputy) a...Expand for more
nd then our Lieutenant General (3-star, Commander). Again, long hours, but a great education. As the 3-star general's exec. I volunteered and was selected for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Doctoral program. As a sponsored student the AF would pay for 3 years of doctoral work and then I would be a faculty member for 4 more years. To qualify, I needed another remote tour. So, off to Korea for a year, where I was the Director of Logistics for the USAF's equivalent of the Navy's SeaBees (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers, or RED HORSE). Back to Ohio and student time at The Ohio State University. 3 years of full-time studying, living on-campus and weekend fathering and I was able to return to Dayton, OH and my family. I was an Associate Professor of Logistics Management and Head of the Maintenance Option (like a major) in the AFIT Graduate Logistics Management School. This tour lasted 5 years. In 1989 I retired from the Air Force and became a Total Quality Management (TQM) consultant for a small start-up consulting firm in Dayton. I was the first full-time employee. Before leaving in 1993, I was the CFO and Vice President of the firm. I then joined Development Dimensions International (DDI) as a TQM and Work Teams consultant. In 1996 I started Lloyd's Learning Services and continued Work Team and Team Building consulting and training. This started our international travels. I worked in Kuwait for 11 months, in Poland for 13 months and in France for 15 months with three plant start-ups. I designed and implemented the Assessment and Selection process and the team development training. Because of the length of these projects, my wife, Esther, was able to come with me, as our children were grown. We developed many international friends and a sensitivity and affinity for other's culture and FOOD! In 2000, we returned to the USA for good and I retired completely. Oh, I finally bought my fishing boat and upgraded my golf clubs. Most of my time is spent in Lay Pastoral work for our local United Methodist Church. My calling is in senior assistance. I chair our Lay Pastoral Care Ministry that visits shut-ins, nursing homes and hospitals. I keep our Prayer Chain current and lead a prayer group. God is Good, all the time! Our favorite retirement activity is having our children and grandchildren visit and then visiting them. We have three very different children and four great grandkids. Our eldest son, Paul, is a corporate senior quality engineer in Colorado. Our daughter, Sarah, after being an elementary school teacher, is a stay at home mom who helps at her children's schools and is now a Mary Kay Director with her fifth free car. Our youngest, John, after being an art teacher, is a tattoo artist and owns his studio in Dayton, OH (previously at the largest art studios in the US in Georgia). Our four grandkids are our delight! I have special fishing previledges with each! This winter in Ohio has me missing the Ocean Beach weather! We wish we were closer to our PLHS friends, but we have no family left in SD, and our church family has become our second family. Thank you for being interested in the past 60 years, 56 years with the same woman. I hope to see you again in 2022 (our next reunion)! Our 50th was a BLAST! Please write me and tell me what you are doing. God Bless.
