Dave's Story
Well, what a long strange trip it's been! I haven't ventured too far geographically from the Sunset district - moving to Oakland to get away from the fog - I've moved a ways to the left following the turbulent 60's and 70's.
Outside of my brother Jim and I being constantly asked, "Which one are you?', I was pretty quiet in high school. I ran Cross Country and track in my senior year, and the closest I got to the football field was working the chains along the sidelines at a few games. I always liked history and politics - my favorite teacher was Papa Sidney Gottfried. I was inspired by Mr Schmidt's Law class and planned to go to law school to defend working people against the evil corporations. I went to City College and UC Berkeley, getting a BA in Economics in 1976.
A lot of the world changed between high school and my 20's, and I was part of it. It started with the McGovern Grassroots in 1972 and moved on to SDS and a group called International Committee Against Racism (InCAR) at UC. We fought the academic racism of people like William Shockley and Arthur Jensen - even taking over Jensen's class and giving him a dunce cap before the cops kicked us out. The defining action in my life was spending two months in Boston in the summer of 1975, building multi-racial unity in a city racked with racist violence against black youth and their parents during the integration of the schools there. it was very intense, sort of like the Freedom Summers of the 1960's in the South. After being arrested with 16 other people f...Expand for more
or assault on one racist (I wasn't within 10 miles of the incident) I began to doubt whether there was justice in our police and court system. 4 people went to prison who didn't do anything! While we succeeded in defeating the violent racist movement there, the experience put the kibosh on law school and four more years of poverty!
I bounced around some union jobs before joining AC Transit as a bus driver on Saint Patrick's Day, 1980. I've been there for 31 years, and have some hairy and funny stories to tell. I've done my best to rally the workers against the never-ending cutbacks and violations of management and capitalism. As a union shop steward, I filed the first FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) claim at AC Transit - one year after it became law. The driver ultimately received 3 years' back pay and an aspect of the case went to the Supreme Court. No, my education hasn't been a waste! I've even organized the workers for fun, too, getting 75 to a Giants' game and 200 to a $1 Wednesday for the A's with a tailgate party to boot.
I have one 23-year old son from my first marriage who is a paramedic stuck in Oklahoma City of all places. He's trying to come back to the Bay, but no one's hiring. I'm single again now and still love to travel. I love Arizona for spring training and the desert hiking. Hawaii is a wintertime favorite, our family is headed there for the holidays to celebrate my nephew's 21st birthday. It's Ireland next July for the first time to see relatives and have a few pints with the Paddies.
