David's Story
Life
It's been a long stange trip from ardvark in high school back to being an Indian. Ive been a biker, cowboy (yes I can ride, rope, brand, break horses, shoe horses anything a real cowboy does) drunk & addict, clean and sober, play and sing country music, traditional dancer (eagle dance, warrior dancer and deer dancer). My hair is long and gray (almost to my waist) yes I still have one. Now I work at as a counselor, I had to do something for work and I do know a little about substance abuse.
My older sister and I own 20 acers in Shasta county, we hope to retier there in about 5 years or less. We will be close to the tribe, we won't have to request time off work to go to ceremony, we will just go.
I'm hoping to open up a clean and sober camp for native children and young adults on the property. I have found there isn't any alternative programs for native people in Shasta County. All they have is jail or 12 step or...Expand for more
christian based programs for substance abuse. They work, but not to well for the Indian population.
School
Lots of girls, I just couldn't talk to them.
Workplace
worked mostly as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. 2001 I was disabled in an accident at work,. went back to school and became a substance abuse counselor.
Two and one half years and counting then I'm done with working for anyone.
Been retired for almost 10 years, Living on our property in Shasta County, 100% off grid, solar power with propane generator back up, Satellite TV and internet, no public utilities.
It's great no having a monthly bill for water, gas, sewer and PG&E.
I split my time between the coast and the mountains, I have a sweetheart on the coast, her place is on the bluff.
Still riding Motorcycles, I have a Victory Vegas and and Indian Springfield one for ridge running and one for the long haul.
Just living life and loving it.
