David's Story
Hi friends, This little note is to inform everyone that I will not be renewing my class mates membership. Instead, I can be found on face book at DavidMatthews54379 (at) fb(dot)com, or on email at draig-coch (at) cox(dot)net. Hope to hear from you!
World-wide travel has been my passion since graduating from Highline and continues to consume my thoughts, time and money. I am living single and based in Scottsdale, Arizona, but I spend a lot of time in South Wales, UK.
At 15, I was member of the Des Moines, WA Sea Scouts and always wanted to "Join the Navy and see the world." So after Highline, I enlisted in the Navy with my pal, Dave Brown (also Class of '59).
I first served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Princeton (LPH-5), prior to volunteering for the Submarine Service.
Following graduation from Submarine School in New London, CT, I was assigned to the USS Pomodon (SS-486), a WW-2 fast-attack sub. She had been commissioned in 1941 -- just like me!
I loved sub duty and made some great friends -- 57 of 'em, to be exact, as we were a very small crew. It was an ideal environment for a young man in which to grow up and I have many fond memories of the fascinating ports of call we visited and the many friends I acquired.
Soon after the Navy, I moved to Arizona, but spent a few years, off-and-on, living in Kailua, Hawaii and New Brunswick, Canada.

er Scottsdale my home base in America, and following 11 years as the City of Scottsdale's Director of Communications & Public Affairs, I provided market research for the Real Estate industry; worked as a Business Journalist; Photographer; Editor; and as an Arizona and Old Mexico tour guide.
A life-long supporter and fan of Hosteling International, I've enjoyed back-packing throughout Europe, South America, Central and East Asia and the former Soviet Union, where I made some fantastic friends.
I'm often asked to state my favorite travel destination. I guess it would be Paris; Machu Pichu, Peru; Siberia in winter; or hitching rides up the Amazon on small trading boats in the early 70's.
But I love to spend time with my close friends in South Wales and get lost in the many small, used bookstores of Hay-on-Wye.
I'm most proud of my daughter Renee', a high school Science teacher, her husband Scott (also a teacher) and my exceptional grandson Steven.
I'm very close to my sister, Beatrice (Highline Class of '65) -- who emigrated to Australia in about 1972 -- and we visit as often as we can.
Researching family history is my avocation and I collect history books and love to write -- as you can see.
I'm currently single and when not in my kayak, I'm "in the book" in Scottsdale and Online at draig-coch<at>cox.net and I welcome all contacts from lost school friends, shipmates and fellow vagabonds!

Dai
