David's Story

I currently serve as the Dean of Extended Learning at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. for Online Education and Planning Analyst, and Professor of Leadership Studies at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. Prior to moving to Point Loma in 2013, I served as Dean of the College of Lifelong Learning, Online, and Planning Analyst from 2011-2013, and before that I served as Vice President and Dean for Online Academic Services at Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs. I went to NBC in 1998 after serving as a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene for 25 years. For any who would like a little more background... I was born in Southern California and raised in the town of Brea, not far from Disneyland. After graduation from Brea-Olinda High School, (other schools played up the B.O. part), I attended Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University). It is a good thing it was not Pasadena University or I would have gone to B.O. for High School and P.U. for College. :-) My first contact with the church was as a Sunday School bus kid. My involvement was not much more than attending Sunday School until my junior high years when I had almost no involvement in church. During high school, I once again became involved in church through the youth group. I became a Christian during my sophomore year of high school and sensed God's call to be a minister during the summer before my senior year. At Pasadena College, I was a religion/philosophy major (ministry preparation) where I earned the Bachelor of Arts degree. Following graduation, I pastored my first church in Hawthorne, Nevada. From there, I spent a couple of years as a youth pastor in my home church in Brea (now Yorba Linda Community), five years as pastor of the Sunnymead Church (now Moreno Valley Church) and 14 years as pastor of the Apple Valley Church, home of the late Roy Rogers and Dale Evans - all in Southern California. We then made the big move to Colorado and spent three years as pastor of the Denver Lakewood Church. In April of 1998, President Hiram Sanders (1994-2006) asked me to join the administrative staff at NBC. Sensing that God was leading us in this direction, we moved to Colorado Springs and joined the NBC community. In March 2011, I accepted the offer to move to TNU and serve as Dean over the graduate, adult, and online programs. It was after 10 years of pastoral ministry experience that I realized the need for additional education. While pastoring full-time, I began to study at the Azusa Pacific University Graduate School of Theology. In six years, I completed a Certificate in Ministry Management, a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Studies, and a Master of Divinity degree. Following my work at Azusa, I went to Fuller Theological Seminary where I earned the Doctor of Ministry degree (1998). Having moved into the field of education, I completed a Master of Arts in Education (MAED) in 2004, with a concentration in Adult Education and Distance Learning at the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science in Education (MSED) in 2010, with a concentration in Instructional Design for Online Learning at Capella University. I am also currently working on an MBA degree as a student at Trevecca Nazarene University. Professionally, I have served on the Commission of Accreditation for the Association of Biblical Higher Education for five years and as chair of the Criteria Committee (two years), as Vice-chair of the Commission (one year) and as Chair of the Commission (one year)...Expand for more
. I have also served on accreditation site visit teams working in both the administrative and academic areas, as well as serving as a team chair. I have also served as a Consultant-Evaluator and Site Team Chair for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). I have presented numerous workshops regarding online education for the Association of Biblical Higher Education, the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications, and ACCESS (a Christian distance education organization). I have also served as a consultant helping over 60 colleges and universities develop online programs. One of my interests in the past was law enforcement. While pastoring in Apple Valley, I completed the basic P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standard Training) Sheriff's Academy and served as a level one volunteer Deputy Sheriff in San Bernardino County, CA, and later in Jefferson County, CO. I especially enjoyed working as a traffic officer and arresting drunk drivers. I had specialized training in traffic accident reconstruction, crimes against children, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol recognition. While I did all the same work as a regular deputy, I was also able to provide chaplain services. It opened many doors for ministry within the community. I have been married for 41 years and have three children. My eldest, a daughter, graduated from Northwest Nazarene University where she majored in sports medicine. She has also done some graduate work at Texas A&M, Trevecca Nazarene University, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and is currently finishing a Master of Arts degree in sports medicine from the University of Texas (online). She is a nationally Certified Athletic Trainer as well as a nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. She has worked as the athletic trainer at a couple of high schools. She currently works for Vanderbilt Sports Medicine as an athletic trainer in a high school and special events. My eldest son is a graduate of The George Washington University (Washington D.C.), where he was a philosophy and political science major, and the Fordham School of Law in New York City where he earned the Doctor of Law degree. He is currently living in New York City working as a lawyer for a Park Avenue Law Firm. His area of work is international corporate securities law. My youngest (a son), is a graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California, where he was a broadcast journalism major. He completed a year volunteer mission work in the Caribbean Region and then graduated from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Courtney, live in Jefferson City, MO, where he is the pastor to families. Courtney is a registered nurse and works in a hospital in Columbia, MO. My wife is a graduate of Colorado Christian University (B.A.), the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (M.A.), and Denver University (Ph.D). She has been an elementary school teacher with the Falcon School District in Colorado Springs where she served as a gifted and talented resource teacher and the district coordinator of the gifted and talented program. She has recently worked as a teaching coach in a charter school in Nashville. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Trevecca Nazarene University, the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, and Nazarene Bible College. I enjoy working out (most mornings), learning new things, reading, watching old TV shows, computers, the mountains, and spending time with my family. I have also just taken up model railroading.
