David's Story

Life After high school, I went to BYU. With a year and a half off to serve a mission for the LDS (Mormon) Church in Southern Italy, I graduated in 1984 and got married (Annette Bay, from Bountiful, Utah) that summer. We moved to Berkeley, where I did graduate work in economics and started law school. After Annette graduated from Berkeley, we moved to Boston, where she did a Master's degree, and I finished my law degree at Harvard. I practiced law in Seattle (1988-1990) and our first two children (Sam and Ruth) were born there. I worked in Honolulu for a year for a federal judge, and then returned to the Bay Area in 1991 to work for the federal courts in San Francisco. Our next two children (Ed and Lucy) were born in Oakland, while we were living in Alameda. In 1997 I got a Supreme Court Fellowship, and we moved to Washington DC for a year. After that I took another job with the federal courts in New Orleans. We lived in a small town on the Louisiana/Mississippi border there until the end of 2001. In 2002, we moved to Sarajevo, where I worked on court reform in post-war Bosnia. From there, we went to Bucharest for a few months, and I worked on projects to reform the Romanian c...Expand for more
ourt system. In 2003, we moved to the Netherlands, where I am working for the United Nations' Int'l Criminal Tribunal that has Slobodan Milosevic on trial. That summer, we were blessed with our fifth child (Isaac), and two years later our sixth (Eleanor). In 2006, we moved to Sudan, where I headed the Rule of Law effort in Southern Sudan for the UN Mission there. That was a hardship post, though, especially for the family. I was literally living in a tent on the banks of the White Nile, sleeping under mosquito netting. In the summer of 2007, we came back to the U.S., and I am now a law professor in Jacksonville, Florida. I really like teaching. The family's made the adjustment to life in the U.S. again. We've sent our oldest two off to college now, so the nest is beginning to empty. Through all our travels, Annette and the kids have hung in there with me. My career has had its ups and downs, but my family has been absolutely wonderful, a source of great fulfillment and meaning in my life.
