David's Story

Let's see now, how good's my recollector? Parents were divorced and Pa was in Alaska, so I got to be a yo-yo. Back and forth at their whim. Wish they'd just left me up North. Last time was a Northward trip on Veteran's Day 1979, if I'm not mistaken. Might've been 1980. Having mostly dropped out of HS during my freshman year, except for a few classes, I decided to not bother with it, did my GED in one morning in Fairbanks, and enrolled at Tanana Valley Community College on the UAF campus. Easy grades, but didn't even bother finishing that. Instead, I joined the USAF (that United States Air Farce), spent 2 months in San Antonio, TX (July and August, of course!) and 4 months in Denver. Then I went to Japan for a few years. Got out in April of '84, only 2 short years after I would have graduated, ordinarily. Went to Portland and hung with some cousins for about a year. then back to Fairbanks for about a year, then Medford again. Went to TREND Business College (it was Merrit Davis when I started, changed halfway through). Quit that just 3 courses short of completion, and tried to continue in Portland, but they didn't want to let me transfer. Another year-ish in Portland and then was back to Fairbanks...sort of started a geographic therapy loop, didn't I? lol Finally broke the loop, by going up to Barrow to wait Mexican tables. Then summer in Fairbanks again and finally landed in Spokane, WA for about 8 years. Been back in the valley of the Rogue now since 1-1-99, married since 4-11-99 and a Grumpa for about 4.5 years. So, that's the itinerary. As to what I've done in these places, well... I tended a lot of bar, starting out in strip clubs (trust me guys, it ain't that great a deal!). That was mostly in Portland. Washed quite a few dishes and cooked plenty of eggs and burgers, pretty much all over. Spent one year working in the engineering department of a 480 foot ship. It was a fish processor, and I was hired to cut fish, but got lucky and hooked up with the engineers before we left port, and never had to touch a salmon OR a crab! w00t! Learned to drive a truck, the summer of '92 and ...Expand for more
got my CDL, class A rated for everything except speaking loads. Found it to be mostly worthless when I got back to the lower 48 though. Seems that you can't get a truck driving job unless you have at least 50k miles OTR in the past year. So I went to work in a recycling plant, with the promise of a driving position soon. When it didn't materialize, I took an offer to haul manufactured homes. Did that for most of the next 5 years and I honestly don't think there's anything I've ever enjoyed doing more than that. It requires a special set of driving skills that you won't find in most OTR truckers (a job most any monkey can do, imo), and it calls for a certain kind of crazy. It works out though, since I learned very early how to back a trailer using mirrors, but I learned with the more typical ball & hitch style, not a 5th wheel...I can't make an 18 wheeler go backwards where I want it to to save my life! Danged things just don't turn right! However, if you need a double wide set up, I can park 'em so close the setup crew doesn't have to do much more than bolt it together! 8) I also spent most of 15 years or so trying to make a living out of being a computer geek..did OK for about 6 of those years, not in a row, of course. I'm tired of it now though. Even managed to please the Bride by reducing my under-desk computer count from 5 to 2 (and even those 2 aren't technically under my desk anymore). For fun, I spent about 6 years playing "Dark Age of Camelot" online MMORPG, in the Mystic Council of Camelot, guild on the Merlin server. That phase is also over. but I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle, come Spring. And for NOT fun, I managed to screw my back up pretty good, oh...around 7 years ago, I guess. Tried nearly everything to help it not hurt and nothing did much good. After almost 4 years of Percocet and Flexeril, I got tired of still being in pain and even more tired of the NoPoopies, so I just stopped, back in May. My Dr. was very surprised that I had no bad reactions from the sudden cessation, but that's his problem. hehe Now, if I could just to the same with cigarettes... 8(
