David's Story

After graduating from East Providence, I graduated cum laude from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y. in 1974 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and graduated in 1975 with a M. Eng. In E.E. from R.P.I. While a student at R.P.I., I was a member of the Path Selection System Team for the Mars Roving Vehicle Project, and a graduate teaching assistant for two controls system courses in the engineering department. I was also the Secretary of the Programming Board of the Union Programs and Activities Committee, and was elected a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honorary society, and Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical engineering society. After graduation from R.P.I., I worked for Procter & Gamble from 1975 to 1986, advancing through increasing levels of responsibility as a process controls engineer, instrument design unit supervisor, process control group leader, business support specialist, and project manager. During my time at P&G I volunteered as an advisor to several Junior Achievement companies, most notably in 1985 to “Spectacular Bid”, which developed and sold “The Blue Chip City Trivia Game” based on Cincinnati. The company went on to win numerous awards, including Company of the Year, Product of the ...Expand for more
Year, and Marketing Company of the Year, and for which I was named Advisor of the Year. That experience inspired me to begin taking education classes at the College of Mount St. Joseph, and in 1986 I left P&G to begin teaching Math and Physics at Elder High School. I remained at Elder for 28 years, retiring in 2014. While at Elder, I created several courses, including Introduction to Engineering, Astronomy, and AP Physics B & C. I also coached JV Tennis, moderated the Academic and JETS Teams and Student Council, and helped to lead over 40 student retreats. I videotaped over 160 sporting events and edited them for broadcast on cable TV, wrote the History of Elder Football, and started and maintained the Elder Sports Archives website for over 20 years. I was a member of NASA’s Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers, and appeared on the TV game shows “Wheel of Fortune” in 1988 and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” in 2010. I was the newsletter editor and president of the Cincinnati Stingers Hockey Booster Club, leading the successful season ticket drive in 1976. I am also a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Westwood, serving at various times as a church school teacher, choir member, vestry member, and lay reader.
