David's Story
Life
As most of you know, I left Michigan in 1985 and never moved back. I spent a few years in Pittsburgh in Medical School and got married to a classmate in 1988. Julie and I moved to Wyoming in1990 for residency. I spent 3 years there and then joined the Air Force and ran an emergency room at Minot AFB before moving to Colorado in 1996.
Julie and I divorced in 2000 (after 12 years of marriage) and I remarried 18 months later. I love my life here and have no plans to ever leave Ouray or the practice of Medicine. I don't get to see my girls as often as I would like, but that is the cost of divorce. I am happily remarried (12/2001) to the love of my life and best friend, Donna.
We currently live 5 miles outside of Ouray, Colorado, in a county of 3000. I have been the main doc in the county for the last 12 years. I am living the small town country doctor dream I had always wanted. The people I care for are not only in my communtiy, but are my friends. I make House calls on a regular basis. In my opinion I live in possibly the most area in the country, tucked up in the San Juan Mountains of South West Colorado at 8000 ft. The mountains rise another 5-6000 ft above the town. I am 50 miles by r...Expand for more
oad (18 by jeep trail) from Telluride for those who know where Telluride is.
When I say I am living the country doc life... I am. Those who knew me in highschool and college would find me a much different guy. Where as in the past I would have opted for the sporty sooped up car... I know drive a pick-up with 230,000 miles on it and a big heavy duty bumper (you would be surprised how much damage an elk can do to a truck). I run emergency lights on top and on the grill for responding to emergencies. I can tell you that a '87 nissan pickup tops out at about 95 miles per hour, a 89 Range Rover (Ex-wifes vehicle) will not go faster than 105 mph and I haven't found the top end for my Tundra yet.
We live on a 4 acre parcel that borders the Uncompagre River midway between Ouray and Ridgway. If anyone is out in this area we are always open to visitors (for those unfamiliar with CO I am 6 hours from Denver). We have a guest house next door to our home, so Visitors are always welcome!!
The pictures I attached are of myself and Donna at 13,000 feet 15 miles from our house and a Christmas (2001) photo of Donna, Samantha (who Donna is holding), Alex (between us) and Bailey (to my left). (Photo is from 12/2000)
