David's Story
Life
I've had a strange and colorful passage through this river of life, and though a place like this may make it seem to be possible to return to a self of a previous life, it is not the same--the subsequent experiences have changed me too. If I was to have met myself now at as the person I was in high school and college, from this perspective I would have admired the idealism I had in those days, while finding the egotism of my earlier self harder to endure.
In the years since I was writing poetry for many of them, publishing one in a magazine (another was accepted, but the book never made publication). I spent a lot of time reading in various venues in NYC during that time.
For awhile I could have been a university computer geek, but my desire to make a difference in the world intervened and I spent 5 years in a clandestine organizing group (it is now somewhat notorious as a political cult, but some of us who participated found a way out and made it a learning experience in the travails of our life).
I finally left the New York area and moved to western CT in 1990 where I met my wife Mardi (we married in 1992) and began to raise our two children. At that time I converted to Judiasm (...Expand for more
being always of a philosophical bent, I found it a comforting home for my religous soul, although Mardi complains the usual complaint of the wife of a convert: I want to be more observant than she). I now run the web site and mailing lists for our synagogue (and produce the monthly newsletter).
Mardi is a cellist (although she doesn't play much now) and our two children are both studying music in school. Mardi also teaches beginning Orchestra at the local intermediate school.
While I didn't write much in the years I was organizing, I have started occasionally again, mostly for weddings (and funerals alas), and for my wife and children. However, I have not tried to publish any of them.
In another way, my life has bounced from one place to another, always moving forward to a point where I can say that all the ups and downs have placed me in a position to raise my children with an understanding of the value of life and love.
If all the words were here
would they uncover a tale
or just become a jumble
of stories without an end?
In the beginning we all know where we're going
In the end we know how we got there
But the passage between is a mystery
that will never become unraveled.
