David's Story
A Brief History Of My Time:
52-65 Lived on Marlow south of 9 and in '64 on Marlowe Place north of Lincoln.
66-67 Rayswift Gables resident of Richmond, MI; attended RHS.
67-70 BHS, interests: rock n roll, girls, books, and counter culture.
70 Oakland University, first-month drop-out.
70-73 Backpacked between communes, worked variously and gained intuition in lieu of paying tuition, until...
73-77 OCC and Wayne.
77-80 KPMG. I audited and consulted.
80 - 82 Recruited to be a financial officer of a construction, development, and investment corporation. They were ethically challenged, I was not. I joined the recruiting firm (Source Services then Romac, now kForce) in Southfield. Married and divorced Anna Ewing.
82 - 88 Transferred to LA, managed Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks and Century City offices. Married and divorced Debra Tilem.
88 - 99 Moved to Valley Center, managed San Diego Source Finance and owned a 5 acre avocado grove. Retired from Source after IPO in 1996. Married and divorced Janet Williams.
99 to present - Settled near the ocean in Carlsbad, north of San Diego. Happily married to the former Ricki Lebby. Have a fabulous daughter, Lindsay, too, who lives in LA.
What would surprise others at a reunion? Four marriages? Otherwise, not much. When reunited, vague recollections provide insufficient contrast for shock. It's a by-product of 'dropped off the radar.'
Which teacher would I love to see again? Any and all. Thanks, to everyone of you.
Wildest thing done? To numerous to elaborate....Expand for more
Like many of my generation.
First crush? Fourth grade. Paula Sherman, how are you?
How do I hope I'm remembered? Any way that makes you smile or shake your head in a good way.
My key to happiness? Lowered expectations. Believing there is no key to happiness; its secured with a combination lock that life opens.
My biggest surprise?
1. As skeptical and eccentric as my imagination may be, I'm continually reminded that events reveal themselves in ways that are weirder than we can suppose.
2. That I reached my age in a seemingly brief moment.
Do overs? To have been more empathetic and kinder to everyone. To have said, "I'm sorry" and "I forgive you" far more often than I have.
Weirdest job? Picking chickens. We went into barns the size of several football fields that were filled with tens of thousands of two pounders that were eerily lit with dim red bulbs, and reeked to deepest hell with the acrid smell of chicken-s#it-ammonia. With tee shirts tied about our heads to act as dust masks, through constant tearing eyes, we grabbed six chickens at a time by the legs and marched them over to a semi-truck, and swung the squawkers into one of the 100 plus cages on each side. Never forget that job.
Where have I lived? Why move? Mostly Michigan till my late 20s (excluding 3 plus years when I backpacked all over and lived seemingly everywhere), southern California the past 25 years. I moved for the climate: economic and weather. I'm glad I did, when I did. As for missing the seasons? I visit weather.
