David's Story

After attending Sequoya & Burbank in OKC, I was at Owen, Bell & Rogers before graduating Hayden in Phoenix. I hated to leave Rogers before graduation and I missed my friends, but there was a familiar face in Bill Bailey from Tulsa. I became a photographer and met many athletes like Jordan, Starr & McGuire and actors like Calhoun, Hannah & Cruise, politicians (I won't mention any names) & authors like L'Amour & hundreds of others in Television and other walks of life. While attending college, I organized a college band and mostly played the music popularized by American Graffiti & Happy Days. We were also a "request band" and so we played a lot of the Beatles, John Denver, CCR, Eagles, Bread, Oak Ridge Boys, Elvis, Cash & Hag. I learned to build houses and we built a few and rebuilt a few. I designed a few, but never got to build one of my designs. I was really good at laying ceramic tiles and liked making unique designs in a large foyer. I served in the US Air Force and though I tested and got my 3 skill level in Photography & Printing, they thought I'd best serve in Office Administration. While in Tech School, the war ended and the only "foreign service" I saw was Biloxi, MS. I was photographed with the Miss Teen USA, who later became TV's Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. (only because I was in uniform, I guess) I have 2 sons and a daughter. Though I hate to move, I've lived in most of the western states and a few south eastern states. I now live near Yellowstone Park and often have deer, moose, elk (even a mountain lion 2 years ago) walking through my yard or bedding down behind the tree line. I still think of my school friends & acquaintances as "my best friends" and I like finding distant cousins & old friends and reminiscing or striking up long conversations about new stuff, old stuff or interesting stuff. I enjoyed working on a wide variety of jobs which I prepared for by attending various colleges. A newspaper, a Veteran's hospital, a TV station, a not-for-profit charity, city of Phoenix, wrote several books, owned a rabbitry and a music/book/video shop that was a victim of 11 September 2001. I've enjoyed culture & language and visited Mexico, Canada, Germany & Russia. (Ya Ne Gavaru PaRuski) (maybe?) I hope to return to Sochi during the Olympics. The people were wonderful and I felt a great privilege to be the first American that many people had ever met. It was also great fun to sit on a balcony, sipping tea and discussing the 1950s and 1960s. As an American Veteran, I was honored during the Russian Veteran's Day. (That was weird) A month was just too brief to visit but the memories will last forever. Germany was too Americanized and so was Canada, but Mexico was interesting. Oh, Schwarzenegger was in the Frankfurt airport and I thought about taking pictures, but he was surrounded by so many men much larger than he is. So, I kept my cameras in my pockets, though I was sure I could take him and 2 or 3 of his bodyguards, but probably not all of them at the same time. ;-) I did study Jeet Kune Do with a student of Bruce Lee and later, another student of JKD. I wrote a few songs and performed solo for a couple of years and that was fun, but I always longed for the "band" that could create the sounds I heard in my head. If you remember my brother, he as some US Patents and has a few skills I envy. My sister has dozens of children who call her Mama and she'll probably have hundreds calling her grandma. She married a multi-talented man who is also an excellent cook. I often wonder what I will do in the 2nd half of my life. Most of my ancestors lived into their 90s and GrandMa was 101, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised to equal their best. I hope to be remembered well but looking back, I was a little "nerdy". I recognized the "cool kids", but it never seemed important to emulate them a little more than I did. Most people don't remember me, so I guess I was more invisible than anything else. Daddy always insisted that I have a "cool" haircut, the night before school photos. Thanks Dad. ;-) I played softball in city league for a few years and I had a lifetime .876 on base average and I only struck out once. I pitched and played 2nd base or was catcher. I really enjoyed 2nd and I was also good as catcher, but lacked arm strength to play outfield, but I did make a few spectacular catches in the outfield. I hunted with a Super BlackHawk and I could hit anything I could see. My fast draw measured 4/10 of a second. I learned to bowl and was briefly on a league where my average began at 260, then began to drop off about 10 points per game when everybody tried to help me "improve" my game. My high score was a 284 at the alley at Lackland Air Force Base. I learned tennis, badminton, volleyball, racquetball & golf. Golf was fun and though I was about par, I'm proud of my 3 on the par 4 17th at SawGrass. I learned archery where my average was 59/60. Mostly I credit my teacher who made the Olympics. I often think about taking up archery again. It was fun. I enjoyed skiing, but I just couldn't enjoy a sport where I fell down so much. I always liked cross-country much more than downhill. Ice skating was more fun than roller skating. I liked the Limbo at the Tulsa rinks. I learned Fencing and I am, as yet, undefeated. I was challenged by a European champion with a world ranking in a double match, but after I defeated him, he declared that I "fence like an American" and declined the 2nd match. I took the "like an American" as a great compliment. ;-) Several of my photos were made into billboards near Camelback Mountain, between Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ. Though I seriously hope to meet again, everyone I've ever met before, some of my best memories involve Donald Hatley, John Speck, Mike Copenhaver, Ronnie Pollard, Gary Neumeyer and Tony Tyler. (Not to mention dancing with Sandie...Expand for more
Painter, Jennifer Price & Katona Taylor) I believe it was Sandy Roby who first named me "Dr David" after I performed a medical miracle on a stray dog in the biology lab. From time to time, my medical skills get me re-christened "Dr David" and I always remember fondly, that day in the biology lab and the poor dog that was in so much pain. I had a few pets with odd markings. Some of them were Cindi LopEar, a lop ear rabbit who liked to stand and move like the singer. Michael JackRabbitSon was all black with a white left front paw. MouseyTongue was a white mouse that I gave to my daughter and she renamed it because she had no idea who Mao was. A dozen dogs have passed through my life and left emotional trails that have not yet begun to fade. More recently, 2 kittens named KathyCash & CarleneCarter because Carly had 4 white "go-go boot" paws. A friend in Idaho named his buffalo "Tennial" so he could call him his "Bison-Tennial" back in 1976 and if I ever get a donkey, I want to name him "Hotey". The biggest surprise in life is probably the big one that changes the life of everyone who experiences it; the Death of a Child. Nothing prepares you, not even a decade can prepare you for the changes to come. My treasures are my children and nothing compares and nothing comes close to my accomplishments or collections or treasures that rust & decay, but cannot endure. When I do remodel this house I'll enlarge the 2nd bathroom and the master bedroom closet and storage and enlarge the front porch. I'd really like a gable on the front of the house, but that could wait. I'd like to fence with Mr Pontius who stole my jacket because he didn't like the colors, unless he prefers another game of choice. My Pickett, the history teacher. Most teachers were unmemorable because they stuck me in the back of the room. School work was easy for me so I seemed to not pay attention or "work hard" at learning. When I half tried, A's & B's were easy for me. I especially enjoyed History, Language, Math, Art, Science, Biology & Gym. Economics & Sociology were more difficult. I remember a great Civics teacher, but what was her name ? If I won a fortune the first thing I'd do is bail out the government's debts so they can balance the budget for one year so they can go deeper in debt again the next year. Then I'd buy more of this mountainside and then some land in the valley below so my children, grand children & great grandchildren, step-children, etc will always have a place to "return home". I'd donate enough money to heart & lung research to cure every major disease, then sadly watch the money go to advertising for more donations, instead. I'd like to grab my hammer and tools and help rebuild Joplin, MO. At least 2 of my cousins lost their homes in the disaster. I read that one of the middle-eastern countries sent computers to Joplin, but we're still waiting for "help" from Japan, Chile, China & Haiti, etc, etc, etc... I''m reading questions on the Story Wizard and this question is "To be truly happy ..." and the answer is that I've done the things that have made me happy. I'd love a larger family, but it's true that our greatest treasures are the most difficult to hold on to. My bucket-list was long and now the remaining items is a short list. I must visit NYC, CT, NJ & DC. Of course Gettysburg & the Hermitage (both), Paris, Rome, Inverness, Essex, etc. I'd like to do more work in helping those who can't help themselves. I've created tiny villages for families and single parent families that are self sustaining and though they need help in getting started, they pay for themselves and everybody contributes. The next question asks what happened to my first crush. What did happen to her ? (she knows who she is, don't you ?) I used to be shy, but I'm amazed at how many people thought I was stuck-up or disinterested. I began getting un-shy in my Senior year and the military changed me beyond my ability to resist. I learned so much about myself and about human nature that boosted my confidence and ruined my faith in innocence & goodness. ;-) I dressed the same until my blue or green uniforms. I bought clothes that were more normal and changed every few years to try to stay more normal and bought much better shoes & neck ties. My weirdest job was giving away "Free Gold", but though everybody wanted the "Free Gold", nobody ever told me "Yes". I've already talked about my trophies, awards & ribbons, but my favorite was probably my first award in a singing contest. I wrote the song, played guitar and sang the song and scored the highest, though 2 comedy acts scored higher. What would I do different ? ... Probably, everything I did in school I'd do different. Similar, but better. I was very funny, but most people never heard me, because I thought nobody would like my jokes & puns. My brother was very funny and people liked his humor. I admired him and learned from him, but I didn't catch on until later. In 10 years, what do I hope to accomplish ? Well, I hope to watch my DVD collection and listen to my CD collection and read my book collection (remains from the shop I owned) My first job was while still in High School in Phoenix. I was hired to photograph weddings and my first big job was being hired to photograph Rory Calhoun, Dick Van Dyke and Amanda Blake. People assumed I was older than 17 and I was paid $25 an hour, but I thought I had to pay them for the privilege. I felt so odd giving instructions to Rory Calhoun and he did everything I suggested and he held his pose while I changed film in my camera. Later that year, I heard one of my songs sung on stage by a popular band in the Phoenix area. Then that same year I heard the first song that was written about me, sung on stage. I guess those are the "childhood memories that I'll never forget". ... please, write to me and tell me about your life, OK ?

I like cooking outside, too
I have certainly discovered that when we truly forgive, we absolutely do forget.
