David's Story

It's been a long road for my life, after graduating, we moved to Sarasota, FL, not before joining the Navy.... what a change of life (from riches to normal everyday person). Ended up going to Vietnam, 3 tours and becoming an Operations Specialist (OS), then onto the Philippine Islands as an Armed Forces Police and Laison Officer at the Olongapo Police Department. What a job that was. Had to learn how to deal with corruption, including the department. Re-enlisted there and received my first re-enlistment bonus...$10,000. CASH!!! What to do, what to do... I spent it on everything imaginable. Broke months later. Young and dumb. From there I went to San Diego, CA where I was a Navy Instructor for 3 years. I was scared to death standing up in-front of all those people. I adapted. Upon receiving orders to the USS Dale (CG-19), a missile cruiser, in Mayport Florida, I attended Air Intercept Controller School. Boy! that was fun. I was incharge of multi-million dollar fighter jets with human lives. I graduated with honors and off I went. Once onboard the USS Dale (CG-19) where I spent 5 years, I was fortune to travel all over the Mediterranean, Africa, Mid-East, and North Atlantic, visiting many many countries. I didn't know much about being a cruiser sailor so I learned to adapt and be one of the boys. While onboard that ship, I was trained in shipboard warfare, didn't know much about it then. I also went back to Virginia Beach to Air Intercept Controller Supervisor School. NOW, I was incharge of all AIC's within a battle group, recertif...Expand for more
ying them and conducting proficiency test. Upon leaving that ship, off to Charleston SC to be an Assistant to the Officer in Charge of a Data Analysis System, another learning curve that took about a year to learn and another 6 month to fully understand. After my 3 year stint there, I received orders to the USS Forrestal (CV-59) where I was the Leading Petty Officer and eventually Chief Petty Officer of 115 seasoned sailors. That ship was so huge, didn't know what to do other than my job. Wasn't good at it first, but learned to be an Air Craft Carrier sailor. I again was off to the world in defense of our great nation. While on that ship, I went to another Air Craft Carrier (USS America CV-66). to assist in Mid-East Ops. I met a fellow classmate there. TERRY HAMERIC...Yes I couldn't believe meeting him there. I was a Radar Navigation Officer transiting the Suez Canal when I met him on the bridge of that ship. Terry was a Fighter Pilot RIO of a fighter jet stationed onboard that ship. Wonderful experience. After returning to my previous ship, I received orders to RTC Orlando as a DRILL INSTRUCTOR!!!. Yep!, that was me... I faked being a bad-ass sailor who sailed all the 7 seas, visited 42 countries and sailed around the world 3 times, drank like a f fish and partied all night. I survived there and retired. That's the story of my navy career. Since then, I have moved several times (from Florida to North Carolina). I've had a wonderful time where ever I went and what ever I do. I hope you all enjoy my story. Thanks for reading.
