Debbie's Story
Debbie resides in Fort Gaines, Georgia. Debbie is married, She and her husband each had two children from previous marriages, and altogether have 9 grandchildren.
Due to moving often Debbie attended 10 different elementary schools, 4 junior high schools and two high schools. Debbie's parents divorced before she started school, and then she was bounced back and forth between them. Her father picked up and moved several times in the middle of the night with no warning, to keep her mother from finding her. Debbie suffered greatly and lacked socializing skills as a result. She felt she was always an outsider to her classmates, she was, painfully shy, withdrawn, and lacking self esteem. She was not allowed to participate in any extracurricular activities, have any friends over to her house, nor go to anyone else's home. Perhaps now when one reads this, one can understand just how miserably awkward and lonely her school experiences were.
Debbie legally changed the spelling of her name to Debi ages ago, because she had been signing it that way since about puberty. She detested being called Deborah, because that was not her name. She had changed the spelling in hope that the abbreviated version would remind teachers.
In the middle of her senior year in Wingfield, it became impossible for Debi to remain in her father's home and she ran away one night; was by the grace of God, found hitchhiking down the interstate by a classmate who picked her up, and helped to reunite with her mother. And so, from January 72 until May '72 she attended and graduated from L. W. Higgins High School.
Debi married at age 19, had two children and divorced at age 26. She had a second marriage that ended in divorce after 11 years.
Debi is married to Tommy Carnes, Somehow in God's infinite wisdom and humor He brought these two together...this was before the age of computers. Debi and Tommy both had personal ads in the newspaper. Debi answered his ad, put a spell on him plying him with her culinary skills and delighting him with her intellect. He impressed her with his incredibly large and powerful brain and wit. He made her laugh. And she found herself experiencing things she never had before. They enjoyed concerts, museums, baseball and football games, rodeos, boxing ,car racing, botanical gardens, the beach, and shooting guns at his parent's farm. They just enjoyed each other's company! To Debi's delight she found that they both loved to eat the same things; from foreign foods to country cooking, and all seafood. They both were so smitten with each other, neither of them ever dated anyone else after the first meeting. They married a year and eig...Expand for more
ht months after meeting, doing everything as backwards as possible (that's before they were saved, and they were just figuring doing everything backward might bring good luck).. They went on their honeymoon first, when they got back they shopped for wedding bands and then got married a week later. She wore a red dress. Two weeks after their wedding their custom wedding bands arrived. And it worked! Third time was the charm!
At least they thought so...now they know they were part of God's plan to make each other miserable; because misery loves company, and Tommy asserts that IS why he is married.
Their terms of endearment and cooing erupts into laughter...to an unfamiliar acquaintance they appear to be arguing, but Tommy will tell you it's just entertainment.
Debi worked various jobs as a young woman, finally finding her niche when she taught herself diagnosis and procedural medical coding. She later attended American Academy of Professional Coders (Diagnosis and Medical Procedural Coding) to earn her certification. Debi is now Retired, worked at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, and University of Florida Shands at Jacksonville, and as a contracted coder at .Naval Air Station Jacksonville's Hospital, and Northeast Florida State Hospital. Tommy has been a truck driver for 20 years of the 25 years they have been together. Until this year he was, driving regional hauls so he was home on weekends, but now he is home every evening, which makes life much more fun.
Debi's interests include domestic talents of cooking and sewing. She and Tommy have 3 dogs, 3 cats, and Debi keeps them all in line with home baked bread; everything wholesome, made from scratch, and special treats.
Debi has African Violet Obsessive Compulsive Acquisition Disorder. She currently has violets crowding all the windows of the Eastern side of her home...pared down from once was over 100 of them to fifty or so.. She likes Standards and Large violets, has as many different colors and leaf shapes as she can find that will grow well in natural light.
Debi is still a recluse, for the most part, but has ventured out onto Facebook and reacquainted with many classmates from school, and has true friends among them. Later in her life she became more assertive and developed self esteem. She is blessed with a loving family, a supportive husband, and a strong faith in our Lord. She and Tommy are active in a small country church where Debi has been encouraged to sing, and Tommy often leads prayer. Life is not without struggles, but, with love and faith in God, it's pretty wonderful!
I thank you for caring and reading my story. I'd love to hear from you.
