Debbie's Story

Reflections on my life - May, 2009 Two days after graduation I started working at Michigan Bell and I've been there ever since. I married Rick (the love of my life and a '73 grad) in 1976 and bought our first home in Redford. We have two boys and moved to Livonia in 1983. As blessed as my life has been, it has also had its moments of sadness. In 1983 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in spring of 1986. I lost her in Dec of '86 and him in Mar of '87. The next years were spend at the soccer fields; with both boys playing soccer Rick and I were split many holidays in different states at different tournaments. Both boys continued to play in high school. Rick had joined me at MBT after graduating from Wayne State but left in the early 90s and got his builder's license. He started his own company and has remained busy with a successful renovation business ever since. In 2000 we built our retirement home up at Higgins Lake in Roscommon, MI. We have done all of the interior work ourselves. (Rick does the work, I help.) We hope to retire there some day. Until then, we enjoy weekends, vacations and holidays. If you went to Stuckey and remember Mrs. Davis (4th grade), she lives up the street from me at the lake. Boy was that a surprise when I saw her in my driveway. This March I celebrated 8 years of being...Expand for more
cancer free, having been diagnosed with colon cancer on Valentine's Day 2002. 2002 was a rough year for me as I had been told I had diabetes the previous October. Between adjusting to that and having to have multiple surgeries and chemo it took a toll. Through it all, Rick and the boys provided endless love and support. I went back to work in 2003. In 2005 our family expanded again when our oldest son got married. They moved to Colorado the following year to work together as architects in an Aspen firm. In 2008 our first granddaughter arrived. They moved back home to Michigan Dec '09. After completing a BS degree our youngest son became a firefighter/paramedic, deciding not to persue a high school teaching career. He is currently living in Virgina working at the Prince William Co. Fire & Rescue. I have many things to be thankful for. I have a loving family, relatively good health considering the alternatives, employment and health benefits. I'm thankful that Rick was in Mrs. Jewell's English class at Pearson in the 9th grade, that we stayed in touch in the 10th grade (although he probably wished we didn't), and that he was in Fekete's English class with me in 11th grade. As we approach our 34th wedding anniversary in May, the 38th anniversary of our first date next month and the 41th anniversary of the day we met this September I am most thankful for him.
