Debbie recalls her experience as how she became a new co ed at Cal Baptist.
I never dreamed I would ever go to college. I studied hard in school and got average grades, but I never took any college prep courses. It wasn't anything I thought much about. My church youth group took a trip to California Baptist College for a college preview day - this is when I seriously took a look at the possibility of attending college. I didn't have any money for college and neither did my parents. How was I going to be able to afford college?
Sometimes what appears to be obvious turns out to be an opportunity for a miracle? No money, no savings, no college; this did not stand in the way of me attending the fall of 1973. I worked all summer as a Courtesy Clerk at Safeway (which became my summer job over the...Expand for more
next 4 years) and put my money aside. With this little nest egg and a small allowance I would get from SSI for my mother's disability would get me started. I had just enough to be able to afford tuition for a small load of classes and housing. Now I had to pass the entrance exam. Yikes. This was a tough one, but I passed and I was admitted.
My first glance through the course catalog I highlighted the classes that interested me. These classes would direct me toward what became obvious to me as my major - Religion & Behavioral Science. Yes, I took each class I highlighted and upon completion of 4 years I earned my BA.
Although I did not end up with a career in Behavioral Science, the education has been worth the hard work and discipline I put into learning the principles of social behavior; in my personal life, church and workplace.
