Debora's Story

Life Excelled in being a ranchers daughter, loved and lived most young girls dream of practically living with horses. Loved being a mother and was very involved in their lives and now their childrens lives(being a grandma is great). But my greatest dream was going to college(started at 35)now possessing an AA, BA, and two MA's. I also write and have been published both with my poetry and my journal articles and hope to do more. While my life has several dips and roadblocks and continues to be eventful with my MS I continue to find ways to meet the internal goals I have set. I have two children; Casey 29 and Faith 26. Casey has a 16 yr old son and lives in Denver. Faith is in the Air Force and is currently in England, she is married and has 3 children Nickcarra 16, Christian, 11 and Orion 9 . My parents still live in Brush. School All of us remember high school differently, some fondly some not so. I was "different" having grown up on ranches I did not know how to play click games, so was often alone, generally associating with individuals 2 years older because that is where I was most comfortable. Some of the teachers were great, Ms Walters fed my love of reading and writing, was a mentor that helped me through the tough times, so that I could stand up for what I believed in. Being married before my Senior year seperated me more. Having teachers single me and Donna out for our"opinions" on married life in classes was not my idea of fun. Going to a school that 3 other generations have gone too can be hard. While it was a sign of the times, the classism that decided that because I was low-moderate income and a girl meant that I didn't need to take college prep classes because I wasn't going there. Not being encouraged to feed the love of learning was a disservice. While I am getting where I want to be now who knows what I could have done with a little ...Expand for more
encouragement then. College One of the greatest compliments that a professor ever said to me (though she meant it as an insult) was to say I was too big of an advocate to be emotionally removed on a cause. Everything I have learned in all the years of college was and has been aimed at this goal. I live for learning and will continue to do so until I draw my final breath. I couldn't get enough of college it was as if someone opened the doors to a candy store and gave me the key. What I couldn't stomach was the backbiting and politics. While I eventually learned how to play the game I am not good at it because I have too much respect for people to undercut them. Next to advocacy I love Sociology because it aims at the whole picture. Without understanding the whole you can't find the answers. Workplace I have found my nitch, calling what ever you label it. Working for DVI I come close to having it all. I do;advocacy work on behalf of disabled women, travel both in-state and nationwide training and doing public speaking as an expert on violence against disabled women, access, ADA etc. I also work locally on task-forces, public policy, write articles, grants and opinion papers. I do what needs to be done to keep the agency open ( only one of 5 in the Nation that specializes ). I reseach and expound on areas that have been missed, overlooked or ignored. This is my nervana. I now am unemployed again and I have decided that for my health I am moving back to Brush, to work or give into my disability and reevaluate my goals. I have several books and articles I want to write and I will work on them. 2010 update Lost my son on Jan 24th, still unknown, but believed that the pain meds played a part in his death. I now have a 16 yr grandson to raise. I am working at Sykes in Sterling but still looking for something more in keeping with what I love to do.
