Deborah's Story

I was in the class of 1970 and have 3 sisters and 2 brothers. I married while in my Senior year in high school, then divorced four years later. I was also married three, yes three other times and divorced them, too. Surprised? Me, too! I've moved 26 times in my life! Sheesh! I have lived in North Carolina (Camp LeJeune), Oregon and Utah. We currently live in Enoch, Utah since 2011 and love it here. I'm married to a wonderful man named Dan and we've been marries since 1994. Between us, we have raised 6 kids and now share 16 grandchildren and 3 great-granddaughters! Our kids are great and come with their own sets of life's ups and downs. They are all good at rising above their challenges and surviving. Our oldest, Michele lives in northern Utah, was a counselor with troubled teen girls and now works with the homeless families in Salt Lake City. Our son, Shawn has worked for UPS for over 20 years. Our son, Danny Jr. is living in southern Utah, too and delivers meat to private homes.. Then, our son, David works for Disneyland and the Pasadena Unified School District. Our youngest daughter, Sondra is living in SoCal working in Oak Glen. Last, but not least, is our son, Evan, who lives in Utah and is the maintenance man on heavy production equipment. In June of 2020, our oldest grandson married his long-time girlfriend. They have two daughters. My first job in my career of jobs was in 1973 at a Soda Shop and gift store in Glendora making $1.65 a hour. Can you believe it? I made home-made sodas, malts, and shakes, banana splits and all sorts of ice cream concoctions. I went from there to Monrovia where, in 1974, I was a welder making braces for teeth. I wanted a job closer to home and went to Jack-in-the-Box on Azusa and Cypress the same year. Yeah, I flipped burgers with the best of them and made a mean taco, too. In early 1975, I went to work for J.C. Penney in quality control. I even worked on the sales floor selling carpet. From there, I went to being a food and cocktail waitress and learned how to get blisters on my feet from being in heels all night. I learned well, too. I went on to serve cocktails at a bar and a bowling alley, probably the lowest point in my life. I worked for a feed and grain store in Whittier in 1977 and built up muscles in my arms throwing bags of feed and bales of hay. Yep, I'm a "Jill" of all trades. I worked for a tile contractor taking calls, then got into bidding on jobs and made a bundle until my boss decided he was paying me too much. So, I went to work for another tile contractor, did payroll, and learned how to bet on horses at Santa Anita Race Track. My boss was a BIG gambler so I learned a lot from one of the best. Paid off my car, bought new furniture and enjoyed life, but never got hooked on it. My next job was in 1979 with Harry and David in Medford, Oregon, on the sales phone, taking orders from all over the states. It was a seasonal job so, when I came back to California in '80, I worked briefly as a cross-country driver, delivering vehicles. I got to see some of the country and that was great! Now, the next job I had in 1980 was out of desperation. I went to work for an in-law who owned a nut factory ... right up my line ... Nuts! We actually threaded nuts for industrial and Federal jobs, very precise work. It was a messy job and even though we wore heavy gloves, we still got metal slivers in our fingers. Ouch! Next, the same year, I went to work for Gorham China which was then in San Dimas. I painted real gold and silver (it was kept under lock and key) on the rims of plates and bowls. That was actually fun. My supervisor taught me how to operate and repair the paint machine, and I got pretty good at both. In 1981, I moved to Utah, where my third and fourth children were born. I sold Avon for 4 years and supported four...Expand for more
kids on what I was making (it can be done!). When I moved back to California in '86, I continued to sell Avon for another 12 years. I started up my own business doing housekeeping at the same time, then met my "forever" husband, Dan in 1993. Since then, I worked for an elderly man, taking him to visit his wife in a nursing home, cleaning house for him and doing his shopping. He was like a dad to me. I was also working at the same time for Edgewood Press in Covina, right around the corner, doing filing, answering the phone and taking orders from schools and businesses for folders (like Pee-Chee's, only custom designed). I left there and went to work for Hallmark as a sales associate and got involved with the infamous Beanie Babies. Don't even ask ... ! After an injury from a car accident, I stopped working and settled into just being Mom and Grammy. I love that the best. I started up a business making and selling therapy packs and did very well selling to private customers and at street fairs. Those were very busy days and I was sure I was going to wear out my sewing machine. I later went to work work for my second cousin at Rally Staffing in their corporate office (RMS) in Rancho Cucamonga doing payroll and various clerical duties. I also worked for her other office (Source One Staffing) in Irwindale as a personal assistant to the H.R. Manager. I worked with both companies from September 2006 to June 2010. In June of 2011, I discovered a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Pretty scary! I lost one of my "girls". but survived to talk about it. I've been cancer-free since then. My husband, Dan, was a mail carrier and retired from the Post Office. He's bored, but can't work due to being on a disabled annuity. I went back to work when his health started to deteriorate. He's doing the best he can but is not capable of going back to work in the capacity of his former job. In November 2011, we moved to Utah, where we own a half acre that we planned to build on. It's in Enoch, north and adjacent to Cedar City. My mother passed away in 2012, leaving me devastated. Our property was next to her home, so, instead of building our own home, we bought Mom's house instead. We're happy here and plan to stay here. Well, now that I've rambled on forever (I was like that in High School, too!), I hope that you feel comfortable keeping in touch and sharing your own family memories. I would love hearing from my friends and classmates from Gladstone High School! Some extras: If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to my Heavenly Father, then spend the rest on building a home, finding a GOOD doctor to help my husband and put the rest in savings. My current age is 68. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be pretty dang ancient. I was so completely off, but close ... HA. My best friend, Bonnie would tell you I'm a good, sincere friend, good listener and good at keeping confidential things to myself, absent-minded and just plain silly, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and maybe even stuck-up. Not so, though. My oldest friend is Theresa (Roberts) Nickerson and we grew up together. We've known each other since 1960, lived across the street from each other and had a lot of things in common (as we much later found out!). We liked cruising at the beach, Hollywood and downtown in West Covina at Bob's Big Boy. Anybody remember that place? My husband actually managed that place a few years later! We are still friends now and keep in touch through e-mail. I'm on Facebook and can be found under Debbie Jones, Look me up and say "Hi!". I don't use this site much so that's the best place to find me. BTW, I've been trying to find Angie (Lowe) Traina as we lost touch over 26 years ago. If anyone knows where she is, tell her to look me up! Thanks!! [Updated 7/30/2020]
