Deborah's Story

Life of Deborah Brown Kimokeo...so far! Born Oakland, CA to Jess & Gloria Brown. Siblings: Helen, Jay, & Janet K-12 Education: Tulelake,CA (Tulelake Grades K-8), Burney, CA (Burney Jr. Sr. High Grades 9-10), Redding, CA (Enterprise High Grades 11- 12, graduated mid-term) College: University of Oregon -Eugene, Oregon BS & MS Curriculum & Instruction, 79 & 83) Lewis & Clark College - Portland, OR MS School Psychology, 1991 Columbia Univ/Teachers College, NY,NY MEd & EdD Educ. Leadership, 2006 In between all that schooling, my father was killed, (Sept. 1969 right as we moved to Burney). My mother remarried a very fine man, Ray Bibbens in March 1971, from Oak Run, which dictated my finishing high school in Redding. I went to Eugene, Oregon for my undergrad degree and first masters. I met and eventually married Kimo, my Hawaiian college sweetheart. I taught school a few years on the Oregon Coast and he worked for the USDA Forest Service. Before we moved back East, I attended Lewis and Clark and did a career change in school psychology. Kimo and I moved to Pennsylvania (in the upper Northeastern corner--right by NY and NJ) in 1988 for ten years. I spent most of that time as a school psychologist in a rural New Jersey school district. I had a lapse in both judgment and sanity and started a doctoral program at Columbia University in NYC, which I ended up finishing FINALLY in 2006! (This took many cross country trips for final advising, dissertation editing, and finally my oral defense--as we had already moved again West in 1998). We moved to Davis, California in 1998, where we continue to live. I recently retired as Davis Joint Unified School District's Prevention & Crisis Manager My husband retired in 2000 as a national recruiter for the USDA Forest Service and used his office at UC Davis as his headquarters. Sadly, no kids of our own but have a great life together--30 years married on March 15, 2010, thank you Lord!We love our nieces and nephews to pieces and occasionally "adopt" our friends' kids, too! Sister, Helen, and her husband, Norman, have three wonderful children-our niece,Jessa (will be a senior at Willamette University next year), Helen's other daugher, our niece Micah,( will be a junior at Macalester College in St.Paul, MN next year), Helen's only son, our first nephew, Ames, (will be a senior and graduate in 2011_. Brother, Jay, and his wife, Michelle, our the proud parents of two; our niece, Edie, almost 5 and their newest addition, our nephew, Jesse, age 3. Sister, Jan, and her husband, Paco, have two precious boys, our nephew, Pa...Expand for more
quito age 4 and his younger brother, Giovanni, age 2.They only live a couple blocks away from us and we are so blessed to get to watch them grow up and snag them every chance we get! All the sibs are great parents and watching them with their children is amazing. I like swimming, biking, reading, and traveling. Kimo and I both are very involved with our Christian faith and seek opportunities to be involved at church. A German publishing house published my dissertation as a book in 2008, which was my first, & pretty exciting. It won't be a best seller, but at least I have something beyond a million dollar student loan to show for my work! In 1994, a wonderful thing happened! We established contact with my Italian relatives in Northern Italy. We have had a blast getting to visit and know them. We travel there and they sometimes travel here as well. Having dinner with my family in their homes outside of Venice is like being part of an Italian movie. What a wonderful added dimension they have been to us. I taught English one summer in Poland. Kimo and I both love meeting and helping international students. In Davis, we often host foreign students through the International House here in Davis, until they find their own places. We love hosting visitors from far and near, so come on over!!! That's about it! Keep in touch!
