Deborah's Story
College
Upon graduation from high school I went directly to Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) for
the '83-'84 school year with an undeclared major (was deciding between music and journalism). Within 3 weeks I was ready to transfer out to Temple University but was persuaded to "stick it out" for the year. I entered Temple University in the Fall of 1984 where I studied jazz piano until I switched to the Music Education degree and kept a jazz concentration. I pledged Sigma Alpha Iota Fraternity for women in music where I held the positions of Vice-President and President. I was a radio disc jockey for our college radio station (WRTI Jazz 90 FM 90.1) for 3 years where I was an on-air personality as well as a live remote DJ, production assistant, and live emcee. I graduated in May of 1990 with a bachelors degree in Music Education with a Jazz Concentration and a Minor in Religious Studies.
In the summer of 1998 I began studies at West Chester University in West Chester, PA for a Masters Degree in Music Education with a Kodaly concentration.
Workplace
After graduation from Temple University I worked as a music teacher and organist for St. Tolentine School in South Philadelphia for 2-1/2 years. I then worked for the Haddonfield, NJ School District in both elemen...Expand for more
tary and middle school settings as a music teacher. During this time I also supplemented my income by giving private piano lessons from my home as well as working for a variety of caterers in the metropolitan area. I also worked as a church organist/choir director for First Baptist Church of Norristown, PA for 8 years. I then took a one-year, long-term substitute position at Girard College in Philadelphia where I taught elementary music classes and directed the middle/high school choir and played with the jazz band. After this I worked as an Itinerant music teacher for Instrumental Music Programs in Wilmington, DE for one year. Then I went to work as a full-time (!) music teacher in an elementary school in the Lancaster (PA) School District. I had been with the School District of Lancaster for five (5) years before I was awarded the assignment of ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) helping to teach English to Japanese middle and elementary school students in Sano, Japan for one year. That year has been, by far, my most rewarding to date. Upon my return to the U.S. (kicking and crying, I might add), I rejoined the School District of Lancaster as a music teacher at Reynolds Middle School where I found the year to be challenging, to say the least. Gosh, I miss Japan!! :)
