Deborah's Story

I was quiet during high school. I worked as an aid in the library while I was at Fargo North High School. After graduating from North in 1976, I joined the Army as a private and was on active duty for almost 6 years. I was a Veterinary Technician working with peoples’ pets and military working dogs. I spent three and a half years at a duty station in Germany and I visited many places in Europe. I also started taking college classes while I was in the army. After my initial active military service, I moved to Denver, Colorado, and enrolled at the University of Colorado-Denver. I also joined the Colorado Army National Guard. A few years later, the National Guard sent me through officer candidate school and commissioned me as a second lieutenant. In college, I took many pre-med and sciences classes, though I finally graduated in 1990 with a BFA – Photography. After graduation, I was a desktop publisher in Denver for many years. In my late thirties, I took a hard look at my life. I found, I was still interested in the medical field though my interests were alternative more than conventional. I changed my focus to alternative healing. After dusting off my science knowledge with some prerequisite classes, I moved to Arizona to attend the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM). I also continued my military service by joining the Arizona Army National Guard. SCNM is one of five 4-year post-graduate Naturopathic schools in the United States. el conventional medical school and students spend the first two years primarily studying the basic sciences followed by basic science board exams. The last two years focus on clinical sciences and clinical rotations, followed by clinical board exams. I graduated as a Naturopathic Doctor in 2003 and moved to Alabama the following year to start a Naturopathic Medical Practice. When I moved to Alabama, I joined the United States Army Reserves and the military promoted me to Lieutenant Colonel in May 2005. After spending less than a year practicing naturopathic medicine, I was called up to active service and deployed to Southwest Asia. I spent a year of deployment in Kuwait (9 months) and Iraq (3 months) during 2006-2007. In 2010 to 2011, the Army Reserves activated me again for 15 months in the United States (Iowa). I joined a team of people who stayed in Iowa to support the units and Soldiers underneath an Army Reserve Headquarters Command while the main unit spent a year in Iraq. While I was in Iowa, in March of 2011, I celebrated the 35th anniversary of my military service. As I write this, I am preparing to deploy again to Afghanistan for a year and I hope to start practicing naturopathic medicine when I return. I started getting the Reunion Newspaper many years ago, and it always takes me back! I planned to make it back for the 30th reunion, after missing earlier reunions, and a deployment got in the way. I hope I have a chance to be at the next one! —August 27, 2011
