debra's Story

After graduating from high school, I spent 8 months helping missionaries in Mexico, followed by 5 years of college, two at American River Junior College and then 3 at California State University at Sacramento. I taught two years in Lincoln, CA and then 2 more years in Idaho Falls, ID before getting married and moving to Vancouver, British Columbia where my husband studied and received his PhD in Chemical Engineering. I worked with hearing impaired students and studied writing for children. We moved back to California, setting up house in Lodi . After 5 years we took a sabbatical to Zimbabwe, Africa for a year an half where my husband taught at the University of Zimbabwe. Moving back , we bought a house in the country in Acampo, Ca where we lived for 3 more years before moving to Flagstaff, Ariizona. There my husband taught at Northern Arizona University and we had 2 more children, totaling 5 in all, homeschooling all of them . In 1996 we moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where my husband became the Associate Provost at Lawrence Tech University. I continued to h...Expand for more
omeschool our children. In 2010 we moved to Botswana, Africa where my husband became the Vice Chancellor to a starting- up international university of science and technology . He will be there for another year ( 2013) fulfilling his 3 contract, but I have returned so that my youngest son could attend high school due to his passion for baseball, wanting to play high school ball in hopes of getting a baseball scholarship for college. While in Africa I taught English as a second language. Of my children, my oldest son is married, working as an architect, my daughter is a mechanical engineer, working in Uganda, Africa with Samaritan's Purse, number three, a son, is in his last year of college studying premed, fourth child just graduated from high school with a passion for working with motors, so my guess he'll be a mechanic of some sorts, and the last is a son in his junior year of HS which I had previously mentioned has a love of baseball. He is a left-handed pitcher with big dreams for the big leagues! I'm trying to help him think of alternatives, however!
