Deitra's Story
Life
After I finished High School, I worked at Lone Star waiting tables and taking care of my mother who had Multiple Sclerosis. I began teaching and met my husband (of 14 years) within the first year of my graduation in 1996. My husband, John, and I met playing volleyball and got engaged three years later. Sadly, my mother passed away at the age of 48. In her honor, I took part in the MS walk with about 25 students and a group of friends each year.
John and I got married on May 1st, 1999 and honeymooned in Jamaica. We are still happily married and enjoying life! We have been utilizing every opportunity to travel and have been blessed to visit almost every state in our country and travel extensively around the world. We live in Monclova Township outside of Maumee. Our Doberman is almost 11 and we have a Bull Terrier that just turned 4. We have a 220 gallon fish tank which led us to enjoy our scuba diving passion! We do not have children but have temporarily fostered children over the years. in addition, John and I truly enjoy our amazing niece and nephew, Sarah and Jacob. I am very close to my two sisters and my father and cherish the time that we all get to spend with one another. John and I look for every opportunity to enjoy our days to the fullest. We are active in our church, regularly play volleyball and spend a lot of time with friends and family. We feel truly blessed and continue to appreciate one another and our life together.

John has been an engineer for almost 20 years; he is currently working for NASA in Sandusky at Plum Brook Station. He has been there for 5 years after working nearly 15 years at the Dana Corporation. After I graduated with my PhD in 2009, I began teaching at the University of Toledo in the Educational Administration Department. At the time, it was my second year as a School Principal with Toledo Public Schools. Prior to that position, I was a school counselor. I spent a total of 16 years at Toledo Public Schools and because I always seemed to gravitate to the counseling aspect of my jobs, I decided to start a side venture specializing in private practice counseling. I wanted to integrate the mental health counseling with other services targeting physical and emotional health. I opened Serenity Health & Wellness Center in April of 2010. It is an amazing facility offering over 20 modalities in holistic wellness services, relaxation, and age-defying treatments. We now have over 6000 clients and are planning to expand in the fall.
