Delton's Story

Life Hello: If you knew me as a kid or young man, you may have known me well enough to know that I never thought back then that education would be a big part of my life. I didn't do well at Lufkin Junior High or High School. But I was good at being there. Didn't miss a single day of junior high, and only two days of high school. Only missed five days in twelve years of school. But later on, I surprised myself. I completed graduate school (M.A.) in communication from SFASU in '91. This was many years after completing a journalism degree (B.S.) from Oklahoma Christian University, after a period in the Air Force. I met my wonderful wife of 29 years at OC. She's originally from Michigan and graduated from Michigan Christian (now Rochester College) in 1978 (A.A.) and West Texas A & M in 2000 (B.G.S.). We have spent all of the time since SFASU in Christian education or childcare. Our work has included college teaching and fundraising management for me, and years serving as houseparents or foster parents for both of us. Mixed in with all of this (a lot of periods with more than one job--so the non-profit world is) have been a number of years as a minister for a small church in the Texas panhandle, time spent as a parenting trainer, and many years as a fundraiser for church affiliated non-profits. Presently, I am the Director of Development for Cherokee Home for Children in Cherokee, Texas, 90 miles northwest of Austin. Do a search and you can easily find our web-site. Valerie works at the children's home as a its receptionist and often travels with me on many road trips. We live on campus at CHC. Cherokee Home for Children is a basic care residential childrens home, licensed but not operated by the State of Texas. We take care of kids (age 2-17) who for a variety of reasons are unable to live in their own homes. Sometimes it's because of their behavior, sometimes that of their parent or parents. Sometimes a combination of both. We typically give the child the opportunity to have the time and structure to learn how to cope wilth whatever problem got them here. It's a great work to be raising money for, and fundraising is the ultimate challenge. In August of 2008, I became a CFRE, or Certified Fund Raising Executive, the highest credential that I am eligible for at this time within the non-pro...Expand for more
fit fundraising field. Our oldest daughter, Katie, graduated from Abilene Christian University six years ago and is married and until recently was a middleschool teacher at Brentwood Christian Schools in Austin. Her and her husband recently moved back to Abilene, where she is in graduate school at ACU. Our other daughter, Rachel, graduated from ACU four years ago, is married to a youth minister and served the same church as an associate children's minister for a long while. She is now an administrative assistant for a firm that helps the elderly with their retirement and disablility benefits. They live and work in the DFW area. Our youngest, Travis, graduated from ACU with both a vocal music degree and a biblical text degree. He is in his second year at Southern Methodist University graduate school, studying vocal performance. His intent is to eventually become a vocational missionary in either France or Germany. I travel extensively with my work, doing a variety of presentations. One is a parenting seminar entitled "Parenting in a Media-filled World". It is offered to churches, school groups, parenting groups and childcare workers through Cherokee Home as a public service. Helping parents help their kids grow up to be more responsible and of greater character is the goal. Details can be found by going to 'parentingandmedia' with a .com at the end. The second presentation is designed for civic clubs and is entitled, "Children at Risk in Texas". It looks at the need for community leaders to pay more attention to those children that might have need and refer them to organizations (such as Cherokee Home) designed to help neglected and abused children. The third is simply a telling of the story of what Cherokee Home does and why. These are made to Churches of Christ that support the home or are considering doing so. Seeking and making these presentations keeps me on the road almost three days a week. But I love driving and touring the great state of Texas. Four years ago we purchased through the Texas Veterans Land Board twenty acres of mostly brush with some trees and pasture near Crockett, Texas. Cleaning this up keeps me busy during time off. We plan to retire there some day. If you are from my past and read this, let me know. I look forward to hearing from old aquaintances and friends.
