Dennis's Story
After 44-years full time in the hotel/hospitality industry, since graduating from FSU in 1968, I have retired as of April 2012. I must say that being able to disconnect from a 24/7 type of business is an unbelievable stress reliever and it iÂs nice to be able to move at my own pace instead of that of someone else. I truly enjoyed my time in the hospitality industry but there comes a time to focus on ones self.
In 2010 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Oral Cancer (almost identical to Michael Douglas, although his tumor was only about 1/3 the size of mine). A real eye-opener since I never smoked or chewed tobacco. I was fortunate enough to have a branch of the MD Anderson Cancer Center (out of Houston) right here in Orlando. After mega-doses (100-hours/each X 3) of "Chemo-Cocktails" plus massive and aggressive radiation (35 treatments), and a lot of rehab, the cancer was gone and I have remained cancer free since October 2010. I have to make the five-year mark in remission to be more at ease.
My new retirement job is now myself and focusing on healthy living with lots of exercise to keep me strong and in a better position to Stand Up to Cancer. The reality is that I feel better now than I have in the last twenty-years and it shows in my medical tests and exams. In add...Expand for more
ition to fitness/power walking we done Yoga and Pilates, but now focus on Aqua Fit, and feel great (most of the time). I continue to improve in my photography and now have more time to work on my family genealogy project.
To kick off our retirement we took an extended trip to Russia in 2012 that included a 12-day "Waterways of the Czar's" river cruise on the Viking River Cruise Line from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. A very exciting trip and a real treat to stand in Red Square, go inside the Kremlin, etc. since everything was so taboo having to do with the USSR and Russia when in high school. Just a fantastic escape without the stress on having to return back to work after getting home.
In 2013 we took a 15-day Panama Canal Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles on Princess Cruise Lines with stops in Aruba, Columbia, Panama (of course), Costa Rica and Guatemala. Another very nice adventure and visit to this "man-made" wonder of engineering.
Both boys are grown up (or at least I like to think they are), married with families of their own, including three grand children. I do remain semi-active on the boards of two hospitality industry organizations and enjoy the opportunity to participate and see my former colleagues, without any responsibilities, so very nice.
