Dennis's Story
Life
I raised my kids ... involved myself in building dams, missile launch facilities, space shuttle recovery platforms and just about everything in between.
Currently retired I am active in the veteran organizations, community association and minicomputer technology.
College
Upon graduation from Wakefield I went to California and attended a Junior College in the L.A. area (El Camino). I tried PreMed, Physics and Chemistry, but ended in Engineering (no language requirement).
I transferred to Berkeley to continue with upper division work. That's when the Vietnam draft got me. I was lucky in that durning service I completed my junior year and most of my senior year core classes. When I got out I only had 1 semister of core classes and a few freebie, fun classes like Geology and Philosophy ...
I got my BSME in June 1972 and completed 1 semister of grauate work in Mechanical Engineering while searching for a job ... it was tough in 1972,...Expand for more
as one had to pretty much be black, or female to get hired then, or so one interviewer told me.
Workplace
After graduation, I was with the Army Corps of Engineers and simply loved the field work. I was involved in everything from dams to space shuttle recovery facilities. During construction, problems would appear and I and a team of enginners/architechs would go to the job site and work out/redesign solutions ... something I found very interesting and rewarding.
I subsequently worked a short time with the California Energy Commission as an Energy Analyst ... not a whole lot of fun ... just sitting at a desk trying to generate a computer model of long term petroleum fuel costing.
Military
During the Vietnam era I was fortunate to get selected to be trained as a nuclear chemistry technician and assigned to Sacramento, California. I totally avoided the vietnam experience. However I did end up getting "Nuked" ... I now "Glow in the dark".
