Dennis's Story

Life From High School to the present seems to have gotten wrapped up in a time warp: stuck on fast forward. The years do pass quickly, it's a worn out clique I know, but so true. Our only surving child , our daughter Elizabeth, who is 32, and a school teacher in Denver, is getting married to a great guy, Dan from Britan. We are looking forward to the wedding this July and their happiness in the future and some grandchildren thrown in wouldn't hurt a thing! This last summer was great getting together with clasmates of "67" at our 40th reunion. It was a real Hoot talking over the fun times we had in the past, and getting to know what everyone one was doing in the present. Time does change us with our vastly different life experiences, but surprizingly: although I shouldn't be, people keep their same dynamic personalities to a large degree. I was disappointed in that many were not there that I would have enjoyed visiting with, but very apprreciative of the ones who made the effort to attend. One of the craziest times I remember of my high scool years was when I was a Freshmmen in the Fall of 1963. It was a planned event taking place on Halloween night at the Town & Country Square. By 4pm Dick Cruthers store was depleted of eggs and by dusk the egg fight was on. At around 12:00am the empty paved parking lot looked like a giant cast iron skillet awaiting the burner to be turned on for the worlds largest scrambled egg cook off. For several years after, it was very hard for teens to buy eggs on Halloween night at Dick's store! My Sophomore year carried almost equal porpotions of the so called"Happy Days". After numerous acts of vandellisim, such as the descecrating of the city swimming pool, the city Father's decided to implement a curfew for teens. Every one under a certain teen age had to be home by 10pm, no exceptions. As was the tradition after a home basketball game and a Sock Hop we all headed for good old Town & Country Restaurnat for the usual platter of fries and cherry cokes with our favorite gals. After visiting and loosening all the salt shaker lids for the next unlucky patrons, the time slipped past the bewitching hour, and the city siren went off denoting curfew was in effect. What happened next was probably the largest body of arrests made by the White Salmon Police Department in its entire hi...Expand for more
story. About 25 or 30 of us were rounded up and marched to the city police department to be booked for curfew violations. Serious questions were asked us and parents were called to post 10$ bail. You talk about some P.O.ed parents. As long as I live, I will never forget the questioning of my good buddy Stan Eccles by Judge Quinton Chapman on what the color of his eyes was. Stan's reply was, "I don't know, your looking at them. " The crammed up quarters responded with a loud Hooplah, and Judge Chapman could only shake his head. The crimnalizing curfew only lasted until a few short months later! My Junior and Senior years are quite filled with memories of occasions and events that will never be forgotten. We had at last became mighty Seniors. Was there anymore to life? What could top this? The world was at our bekon! But,alas, as Bob Dylan sang, "the times were ah changen"! Scenes from the movie of "American Graffiti", were about to end oh so abruptly! The girl that I knew was,"the only girl for me"later married and moved to Canada. But I had many there after, girls that I knew "were only for me". Little did I know that I would end up marrying a cute little Freshmen girl from Husum years later. I barely knew of her when I was a mighty Senior. Go figuire! I would hope that all my classmates would remember me as a person who really cared about them. Although, I know that many times I failed to show that kind of attitude "in my heart of hearts"many of them I got to know, and who got to know me I count it as and extreme privlige to have met their accquaintence. The incidents in life hone our character and mold us as we travel its paths. Losing my son at the young age of ten, from leukemia and my brother at 14 in a car accident has showed me God knows what is best although, we might not understand the "Big Why," and the over all larger picture. I've never strayed far from my roots here in Bruin Country and probably have paid somewhat of a financial cost for not doing so. But where can you go to a more wonderful and beautiful place to raise up a family. You got it. But for vacations and travel, bury me here! I guess if I had to do things over again, I would be a kinder and more loyal person to the ones, (family, friends, and aqquaintences) that I think highly of and cherish so much in my memories.
