Dennis's Story

I live in Manhattan, Kansas. I am married to the former Deborah Carlson. We have 3 children and 7 grandkids. I graduated from Monsignor Luckey High School and later attended Kansas State University. I served in the United States Navy as a Seabee 1966/1968. My duty stations included Davisville R.I., Camp Lejuene NC, and Marble Mountain/Happy Valley & Chu Lai area of Viet Nam. I retired in 2008 as president from Central Mechanical Const. Co. Inc. Debbie & I spend our winters at our home in Manzanillo Mexico where the weather, golf and fishing are excellent. I am heavily involved in ''Manzanillo Migrant Mission"" which helps feed the hungry here, those unfortunates on Mexican welfare plus the migrant field workers. Last year in a 3 week period we distributed 46,000 pounds of food to the starving, 1,710 families. In Manhattan I work with hospice in the veteran to veteran program and play golf about 5 times per week and shortly after turning 73 I shot 2 strokes under my age. My real love is driving race cars. I have raced on dirt tracks all over the midwest. I have raced stock cars, modifieds, midgets and winged and non winged sprint cars. In 2018 I won the series championship. It was nice beating the ''kids''! I retired ...Expand for more
from racing after winning a big race in Columbus NE. in 2020. Other interests include Kansas State football, and travel. At one point in my early life my bucket list included racing a sprint car, having a hole in one (3 & counting) and catching a Marlin (numerous) so I am a happy camper. Debbie and I are fortunate to have been in all 50 states plus many parts of the world. Much of the travel was the result of her working for United airlines for about 12 years. Free air travel is a wonderful benefit! Debbie spends a lot of time with her best friend, our boxer rescue dog, Coco who we picked up off a road in Mexico. She is also a life Master plus bridge player. Music I like includes Monster Mash & Jingle Bells. Life has been good as we have reached our early 70's with good health except for my artificial knees and in Aug 2021 I had a blood clot and lost about 2/3 of the use of my right lung, so that has slowed me down a little. In 2022 I was hospitalized for a total of 9 days with Cellulitis nearly losing my right leg. After a visit in April 2023 to the Cleveland Clinic I think perhaps my leg issues are finally being addressed. Debbie is now having heart issues after having a heart attack in 2021. Tis the pits getting old.
