Dennis's Story

MEMORIES FROM HIGH SCHOOL Catholic Central High School, Springfield, OH Just as my world became bigger when I started elementary school, it became even bigger when I started high school and met "kids" from the other feeder schools for my high school. Also soon met students from the other high school in town at after school gatherings at Wren's cafeteria and Friday night dances at :El Som. Cranston (East) High School. Cranston, RI When Colliers magazine closed its doors in 1956, my father accepted a position in Providence, RI. So, in the middle of my junior year, I transferred from a small parochial high school in the Mid-West to a large public school on the East Coast. Academic credits were an immediate concern as public schools did not recognize "religion" as an accredited subject. The loss of these credits forced me to scramble in order to graduate on-time. Thank God for Judy Keyes. Doubt I would have passed Chemistry without her. Learned to sail on Narragansett Bay. Learned to ice skate; then learned to skate backwards for pond hockey. (No hockey at all in Ohio and very little ice skating.) Somewhere along the way, I realized I was spending more time talking about college than actual studying to get there. Long story short - I moved college to a back burner. Instead, I planned to enlist in the military, save some money, and complete a ...Expand for more
few college=level classes before my discharge from active duty. It was the second-best decision of my life, MILITARY ACTIVE DUTY More than 30 years of active duty with the United States Air Force, including 14 years of overseas duty in Western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. COLLEGE Master's degree (MPA) in Public Administration, Golden Gate University; Bachelor's degree (BGS) in Business, Chaminade University of Honolulu; Associate's degree (AAS) in Electronics Technology, Community College of the Air Force. Nearly all of it was completed in night school. POST-MILITARY My second career totaled 14 years in Arizona State government with 3 different state agencies: Arizona Department of Revenue; Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System; and the Arizona Department of Administration. For most of my state career, I was an in-house strategic management consultant. RETIREMENT: In 2004, I retired from state government and decided to remain in Arizona. Why Arizona? Well, we've lived here since 1979. There are no hurricanes, no significant earthquakes, no flooding in our area, no rising sea level, very low humidity and few mosquitoes. Summers are hot and getting hotter. Nonetheless, central air conditioning and a backyard pool make them tolerable. The rest of the year, we're the envy of the nation!
