Dennis's Story

Hi to my Urbandale HS and Univ. of Iowa friends! I was a Class of 1969 grad from Urbandale HS, attended Central College in Pella, Iowa from 1969-70, Grandview College in Des Moines 1970-1971, U. of Iowa Jan. 1972 and then graduated from University of Iowa in 1974, BA in Broadcasting and Film. I got to meet one of my favorite directors, Frank Capra. I could not find a good job in film or television so from July 1974 to July 2010 I was selling home music systems, tvs and home theater systems in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and back to Des Moines. It was exciting to see all the changes in tv, video and surround sound and now the business has turned mostly into computer driven audio/ video/home theater which is still very fun. But after 36 years in that career I sold furniture at Homemakers in Des Moines, in leather and upholstery/living room furniture until Dec. 2014. My specialty was reclining furniture. I started at Slumberland Furniture in March 2015 in their Ankeny store until November, it was a great company with outstanding co-workers. I worked at Jared the Galleria of Jewelry until Jan. 2016, I enjoyed selling the high quality watches of Movado, Tag Heuer, Tissot and Citizen. On Sept. 12 2016 I started working in diamond and jewelry sales at Zale's the Diamond Store at Jordan Creek Mall. With my previous experience from Jared and Kay Jewelers I am enjoying this, we have a busy store there with gorgeous diamond rings by Vera Wang, Love's Destiny, Celebration and more. We also carry Movado, Citizen and Bulova watches. Please stop by sometime! My main hobby since high school is photography-I have entered photos in the Iowa State Fair contest for 13 years and have been accepted 11 times with one Honorable Mention, pretty good results. In 2011 I had 2 photos on display, there were 4300 total entered. In 2012 I was one of 70 people out of 1300 that had three photos on display, a great accomplishment. In 2013 I had one photo in, a difficult year where many people did not get one in. In 2014 I had one photo on display, only 841 were accepted out of 3700 entered. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 I had no photos accepted, very disappointing! I also like to bike, have done 4 RAGBRAIS of 3-6 days. I have had three 85 mile rides and when I was 50 I rode my bike 103 miles in one day Perry to Grinnell, my personal record. In July 2011 I rode 55 miles, Boone to Altoona, it was 95 out and I was tired! In July 2012 I only could ride 35 miles from Webster City to Story City, I had a leg cramp and was disappointed, my goal was 50 miles. It was 100 degrees and very windy. In 2013 I rode 3 days of 58, 53 and 53 miles, my brother went the whole week, always a great time! In 2014 I rode 83 miles in 92 degrees on my first day, it was hot! I only did 24 miles the second day but had a blast in Clear Lake and at The Surf Ballroom, and rode 29 miles my third day. In 2015 I rode one day for 73 miles, a great time with my brother and Team Wishful Thinkers. Last year 2016 my brother did the 100 mile day, good for you Jerry! This year I rode 53 miles from Algona to West Bend, my knee was very painful after surgery in March. I only rode 13 miles into Clear Lake on the day of 30 mph wind, but Clear Lake is my favorite place in Iowa, what a happening place that was! In 2018 I had knee surgery in May, could only ride 10 miles and so I was a visitor with my team on RAGBRAI, I could not ride, very disappointing but it was a great time as always! I have one son in Chandler, Arizona whose wife had their first baby, a daughter in 2014, the first Thompson born in 25 years. They just had their second girl in February 2016. I always wanted to be a National Geographic photographer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, I wasn't good enough so now I do that as a hobby. My ultimate job would be a photographer of some sort, for a company or cause where I can make a difference. I was inspired by a book of Medal of Honor Winners, and am inspired by Ansel Adams and Joel Sartore photos. I ride my bike by myself or read history or biography books to get away from daily life. I like walking by the lake where we live or walking around the beautiful Iowa State Fairgrounds. I really look forward to our State Fair every year, I go 4-5 times and watch all the great free bands. It's my favorite place to be in Iowa. 2013 was my first year to volunteer at the Fair, I sold merchandise on two days for the Blue Ribbon Foundation, in 2015 I worked three days at the booth in the Varied Industries Building and started as a tattoo artist at the Iowa Hawkeyes booth. In 2018 I worked 2 shifts for the Hawkeyes, very fun! I worked 3 shifts for the Blue Ribbon Foundation at the Fair as well as the Corndog Kickoff in July, also very fun. I enjoyed working on the Urbandale HS yearbook and weekly newspaper (with my dear friend Bev Davis!), as well as German which was my favorite class. I see many of my classmate friends around Des Moines which is always fun! We like to get together as a group. My heroes were my parents. My dad was one of six kids born on a farm in poor southern Iowa, his father left the family and his mother raised them all by herself. My dad had a great career in the restaurant business for about 30 years including being a manager of Baker's Cafeteria and he and my mother both taught their children to be fair, honest and to help others. They were both active in Cub and Girl Scouts, youth hockey etc. My dad passed away on an accident on RAGBRAI 1999, he did get in our team photo that morning. My parents were always an inspiration to me. My mother rode with me several times driving to Texas to visit my sister and brother, always was a great trip. She liked going to the State Fair also. She passed away in Feb. 2008. My other heroes are the servicemen and women from WWII, they saved the world from tyranny to make it a better place for us. I have met many vets and always thank them for their service. I met a Medal of Honor winner, he sent me an autographed picture of President Truman giving him the Medal. I lived in Omaha from 1977-1993, working at audio stores there. I moved to Ft. Worth Texas for 6 mos, that didn't work out so I came back to Des Moines in Jan. 1994 and have been back here since. I like it here, the "big little city," but I definitely don't like the Republican politics in Iowa now. I see friends and customers around town and people in restaurants know me from return visits. I don't plan to move again unless I win a Lottery and go to Costa Rica for the winter, haha. But I like to travel and would like to visit Maine, Europe again, Italy, Normandy beaches, Costa Rica and other countries and maybe see some of you out of state. We have a five year old Golden Retriever who is a trained therapy dog and also have a tan male poodle who is a healthy 14 years old, rescued from a puppy mill. We added another pure-bred golden retriever from our breeder in Wisconsin, he is a wild guy named Calvin but he is in puppy training. I have a good dvd collection, hundreds of records and cds that I enjoy...Expand for more
, and a great home theater/music system. I listen to classic rock, oldies, and the 1940s and 50s music. My favorite bands are the Moody Blues, The Who, Rolling Stones, Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Holly, Glenn Miller and Meatloaf. I like many movies, especially It's A Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Tombstone, Casablanca, Best Years of Our Lives, Double Indemnity, Gilda, The Longest Day, Sleepless in Seattle, Straight from the Heart and all Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock films. I don't drink or smoke or go to bars. I have a guitar autographed by all the Fabulous Thunderbirds, BB King signed photo and cd, a photo with my son and I with Van Halen, photo and signed cd with Delbert McClinton, photo and signed record with The Crickets, signed records by Juice Newton, WAR, Grand Funk, Johnny Rivers, Foreigner, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy and others. And a large framed photo of the Enola Gay B-29 signed by pilot Paul Tibbets, the navigator and bombardier, a movie poster of "The Birds" signed by Tippi Hedren and a signed biography and photo of "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" signed by Julie Adams. My favorite personal items are my very first camera when I was 11, my Canon film camera and a Canon digital camera and my Cannondale bike bought with my Dad's insurance money in 2000, which is now my Ragbrai/long-distance bike, he would be proud. And I have a one of a kind painting from an artist I bought in Paris in July 1968 when we visited there, a scene of Sacre Coeur church which I see on travel shows, and six feet of barb wire I pulled off the Berlin Wall. My dream home would be on a high hill with many trees and rolling hills over a lake somewhere in Iowa, away from neighbors with many skylights and a nice dedicated home theater room and a 1950's diner room. I was involved in Cub Scouts with my son as my dad was with me, I truly enjoyed that. Kids keep you young. I would be good at being a teacher, I remember all my grade school teacher's names because I had great teachers. I liked Mr. Reese, my first male teacher, for 6th grade at Kirkwood Grade School. My favorite teacher was Mr. Mines, our UHS German teacher, he was a great guy, where are you now Mr. Mines? If I could do it over I would be a teacher, to inspire others. I believe in family and causes to better the world. But if I won the lottery I would start a '50s restaurant with cruise nights with live dancing and hula hoop contests and buy Steer and Stein restaurant at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, ha ha. I lived in Currier dorm at U. of Iowa, what a fun place, it was coed too. I cooked in the cafeteria, worked on the serving line and worked as a soda jerk in the ice-cream shop, which I really enjoyed . I met so many great friends there and still keep in touch with many. Iowa City was a sleepy and fun and politically active place in 1972-74, my first time to vote was for George McGovern in '72. The strip club we went to then is now a hamburger restaurant. Nice Buns! haha Twenty five cent beer at Joe's Place and pinball was some fun, that's where the dorm kids hung out. I am happy in my life but I wish I was doing photography of some type, or being an owner of a bicycle shop or a 50's restaurant like Porky's with cruise nights, I like classic airplanes (like the B-17 in the picture here), 50's music and classic cars, wish I had a white '58 Chevy convertible or a '34 Ford coupe. I look forward to the Good Guys car show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds every July 4th, I like antique and custom cars. I am a big Buddy Holly fan, have been to the Surf Ballroom, to the airport where they took off and to the crash site in Clear Lake. We saw The Crickets in Pella in 2002, got my picture taken with them and autographs, that was swell! I still look the same in my face and am still thin but with a slightly pudgy stomach, haha. I still have hair which is mostly gray now with a little dark brown left, which is better than none! I don't have a style, just clean clothes. If I could I would wear shorts all the time with tennis shoes, very comfy. My only trophy is Honorable Mention at the Iowa State Fair photography competition, out of 3200 entries that year that is doing pretty good. In 2010 there were 4500 photos entered, only 1100 were selected for display and I did get one in. I have had photos on display 12 out of 15 years entering, in 2011 I was lucky to get two in the Fair and in 2012 I had 3 photos on display, I missed an Honorable Mention by one vote. In 2013 and 2014 I had one photo in. My best childhood memories are vacations with my family, playing board games and all the fun family times we shared together and playing with all the neighbor kids on our dead-end street by Drake University. A person is rich who has a great family and friends. My first job was at Baker's Cafeteria when I was 15, where I got paid $1.25 an hour to wash dishes. What I remember most about it is my dad was the Manager. I progressed up to the vegetable serving line to the head server at the start of the line. I miss Baker's, great customers, good low-priced food and a nice quiet atmosphere. I also miss Porky's, cruise nights and eating brats outdoors there was great! My first job after graduating from U. of Iowa was the head chef at Ramada Inn in Coralville Iowa, on I-80. I did that for 2 months then moved to my hometown of Des Moines and started work in audio at Stereo Town on 24th and University. That was the start of a great 36 year career, I miss the "good old days!" I do volunteer work at Planned Parenthood bookworks and booksales since 2011, at the Hawkeye booth at the Iowa State Fair and at the Blue Ribbon booth at the Fair, this was my fourth year to do that, I really enjoy it. I turned 67 in February. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be about 80. I was so completely wrong..age is only a number, I tell myself that after I've biked 70-80 miles, haha. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my basement which is full of stuff now and make it a 50's style room and enlarge our small garage. My dream home would be a ranch house with skylights on a hill overlooking a lake like Red Rock near Pella, or maybe a summer home in Maine on a lake with many trees around, away from neighbors, so we can listen to nature and watch the stars. I hope you remember me as a fun guy, a good friend who liked taking your picture and a person who would gladly help you out in any way. It was great to see all of my UHS friends on July 4th 2009 and some in December! I like keeping in touch with my Urbandale friends and sincerely enjoyed seeing all of you at our 41st Reunion on July 3rd, 2010 in Des Moines. It was a wonderful party! Our 45th reunion for Urbandale HS '69 class was over Labor Day weekend 2014, we had about 54 classmates attend, many from out of state. They all looked great! We had an informal get-together at Stormy's in Urbandale on Aug. 29, a dinner/dance on Saturday and a barbq brunch at Shelley Pitts house on Sunday. What a great time! To my University of Iowa and Urbandale High School friends-"Thanks for the memories!"
