Dennis's Story

Lovin' livin' in Malaysia! Have worked at Dalat International School in Penang since July 1996. Have always taught 7th and 8th grade science classes these sixteen years, with other subjects and responsibilities as needed. It's a great tropical paradise, and our school is situated right on the beach! (In 2010 I wrote) To stay fit, I bicycle quite a bit. Some high school students asked me to sponsor a judo 'club' on Thursday afternoons -- that also helped me limber up again!! (In Nov. 2012 I updated) I now have artificial knees -- very 'helpful' for discussions during life science class w/ grade 7 students!! LOL I am riding the bicycle again...a little. But I really need to increase physio time in the Dalat swimming pool. The first quarter was challenging while still taking meds; second quarter is going better as I keep up with the teaching and grading, and everything else going on. (In 2010). Favorite pasttime now? Sudoku. I bought an electronic version of Sudoku while flying Northwest Airlines one summer. So much easier than the pencil/paper puzzles. My browser quickly takes me to the MSN login and I have completed over 3000 of them (as of June). (Nov. 2012). When I completed 5000 games the software would only allow me to play 1 game, then say something like "the system is unavailable now." I started a new account, but haven't played much since. Coffee? Here in Malaysia, up in the Cameron H...Expand for more
ighlands are the Boh Tea Plantations. Sometime back Boh also got into the coffee industry, and I really enjoyed Boh coffee better than Starbucks. No kidding! However, they have since ceased their brand and I am looking to acquire another one I tried while in Korea, grown in northern Thailand. You will still find me drinking an extra large 'brew of the day' at Coffee-Bean about once a week. (Nov. 2012) just the last few months the Boncafe brand has newly marketed coffees from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, India... My favorite is labeled "Dalat, Vietnam" -- which is the city where my school was founded in 1929. And if you haven't tried it, I do encourage you to ask for a cup of Vietnamese coffee sometime! Gusto Cafe here in Tanjung Bungah (friends Jason & Chun Selvanayagam) serves an espresso shot of Vietnamese coffee that is sooooo good!!! (January 2015) My wife of 33.5 years, Gayle Ilene (Callanan) Tyas, born and raised in Shelton, WA, passed away just before 11am Tuesday, January 6, in oncology ward, 3rd floor, of Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, WA. I have great admiration for all the nurses who attended to her care during this final hospitalization (December 26th-January 6th), and humble gratitude for the oncology doctors at Vista Oncology who advised us regarding a fifth chemo and comfort care. My emotions are not grieving that much because Gayle has departed to a much better place!
