Dian's Story

So interesting catching up with our fellow students lives over the past 45 years. Here's what's kept me busy - unfortunately, I'm short story challenged, I apologize in advance. My family lived in Nyssa for my first 9 years of school moving to Ontario the summer before my Sophomore year. What I thought would be a very traumatic situation, ended up a great experience with having the opportunity of getting to know people from both schools and towns. After graduating from OHS in '62, I went to Cosmetology School in Weiser; tested and received an Idaho license to practice. Moved to Eugene and finished Oregon hours at Eugene Beauty School. Really enjoyed living and working in Eugene. My first actual job of what has turned out to be a long exciting career, was managing for ArDee and Margaret (who owned 4 salons). He was very influential in making me aware of many different aspects in this industry - along with encouraging me into competition work. Ken and I married in October '65 and moved the next year to Portland. He was the first person trained in the newly formed role as a "Food and Beverage Controller" at Hilton Hotels. I was fortunate in being referred by ArDee to Don Burks - who owned 5 progressive hair salons around the Portland area. I loved living in Portland and still consider it one of the best places I've lived. A year later, Hilton moved us to L.A. and we lived in North Hollywood for the next 6 years. Michael was born in 1968 and Michelle 13 months later in '69. We weren't there very long before Ken quit Hilton and started his own Film Production Company (with help from friends in the film industry). I went to work at CBS Television Studios in the Hair Dept. and had the opportunity of learning how to build the huge head pieces the dancers wore in Carol Burnett's Variety Show and Jim Nabor's Show - they were next door studios. The studios were great about giving time off when other projects came up so when Ken would need to go on location I was able to go also and do hair, makeup, script girl, etc. That brings us to Denver - in '73 Ken was hired to go "on location" to make a low budget movie. We packed up the kids, a few dishes, some warm clothing and left for what ended up being 5 months. He hired a sound & camera crew, actors, and off we went to the mountains to make a movie. We loved Denver and found, quite by accident, that Woody Allen was shooting "Sleeper" a few short miles from us when his food crew tried to deliver his crew's lunch to us one day. Unfortunately, we fessed up too fast and had to eat our own low budget meal.....The Major Studios were considering opening satellite studios in Colorado during this time. We decided it would be much better raising the kids here than in L.A., so we moved to the Denver area - however, the studios didn't. Oh well, we were the lucky ones. During the next few years, Ken and I decided we had just simply grown apart too much so we amiably divorced. I raised the kids and managed 2 progressive salons simultaneously for a large Denver Corporation. It was a good opportunity to try out and improve business strategies on someone else's money. In 1986, I tested out for the Colorado Hair and Fashion Education Committee for the National Cosmetology Association. Designed and presented hair and fashion stage shows for other professionals. Always got a laugh from my clients reactions from my stories of going to the bars looking for girls..... models that is! In 1987, purchased two salons and over the next 15 years worked to develop Day Spas. It was an exciting, frustrating, but mostly rewarding time of my life. Through my connections with the NCA (National Cosmetology Association) my employees were able to experience stage work, competitio...Expand for more
ns, master advanced education, attending Conventions around the States, and Hair World (International Show) to learn the latest techniques, products, and business strategies. 2002 through 2005, I was elected State President of NCA. What an undertaking. Had already been very involved over the past 15 years in the Legislative process of our industry going through the 'Sunset Review" process that all Regulatory Agencies have to endure. I'm very prideful that our core committee of 12 people have been able to keep our industry licensed in this State. Not all States have been this successful. I believe very strongly that the Regulatory Agencies is not the place for less Government. I have wished many times that I'd been more interested and paid better attention in U.S. Government class in high school. Presently, I have sold the salons and moved my business (just me) to a Hair Studio. This is an interesting new concept in our industry - a large salon made up of many small studios whereby individuals can have their own business without the normal overhead of a salon and employees. It looks much like a merchandise mart. I'm excited to be able to experience this newest concept in our industry. My children are now adults, happily married, and have 9 children. My Son, Michael and his family live near-by. I'm so thankful that my Daughter-in-law and I are great friends and I get to have Aana (8) and Kevin (6) over very often. They love modeling for me for my Photography Club hobby. My daughter and her family moved three years ago to Palmer, Alaska - an hour drive north of Anchorage. They are loving the slow pace of life, country living with all the farm animals, and home schooling her children. I've been fortunate through my involvement in NCA to travel all through the United States, and the last 15 years to attend "Hair World" every other year in different countries. My plans for the future is to keep traveling as much as possible, work (play, I mean) as long as I can, enjoy the interest groups I'm involved in - President of Last Sunday Investment Club, general manager of SW Photography Club, Treasurer of our HOA (Home Owners Association), hosting monthly meetings for a neighborhood crochet club I started, co-ordinate a small HOA (neighbors) group that attends our local Cultural Center live plays, and Coordinator of a small monthly movie group and hopefully be an inspiration to my Grandchildren as they age. If you are ever in the Denver area, please look me up! 2022- This year is our 60th high school reunion. Where did the time go? I'm still doing all of the above. My work behind the chair has brought me home. 9 years ago this May, I had a salon built in half of my double car garage and luckily my clients have followed me. They're always so helpful with wanting to try new hair styles. I got thru the pandemic with only having to be closed for 2 months with very stringent sanitation rules following. The hair shows for the last 2 years have all been online making it much easier and more cost effective to attend. I changed all my groups to Zoom calls and added monthly calls to a newly formed Family Investment Group (FIG), monthly calls with my Ontario high school close friends ( Linda Anderson, Rhea Minor, Janice Ogilvie) and another call group consisting of 3 other gals I lived with in Eugene, when starting our first hair salon jobs. While the pandemic has been devastating for many families, it has brought mine closer and sped up my learning curve of newer technology. Love Zoom!! ❤ Thankfully, I've had good health so far, still work part time and maintain all my interest groups including my college aged grandchildren. Hoping to add to this list in 10 years during our 70th reunion year.
