Diana's Story

Here comes winter again. Have to say, I do enjoy winter. I enjoy the challenge of being able to be outside and still be comfortable, even with 10 degree or lower temperatures. I have always wanted to try camping in the winter - in a tent, not an RV or camper. Have never managed to get this done. I enjoy driving around the country roads when the ground is snow covered and taking pictures. I enjoy making a big pot of soup to eat on a very cold day. I have to say, I enjoy all the seasons and I am glad I do. I can't imagine just surviving a season, like winter, and complaining and hating it the entire time. Winter makes us appreciate the coming of spring. Each season has its own beauty, just like each season of our lives. We really need to enjoy everything in its time. Summer 2014. Could it really be I have turned 60?? Can't be. Still fighting growing old every step of the way. Working on walking/jogging 2 miles a day with my dogs. Started this last summer after our road trip out west. Semi-retired, driving a school bus (which is a blast) and taking care of my mother's rental properties. Enjoying planing flowers around the house. Really need to get out and hike in the woods more often than I seem to manage. So funny to think back to when I was young and my view of life and the world. How little we knew when we graduated from high school, yet we thought we knew it all and had all the answers. Last summer (2013) took a 2 week road trip with my oldest son, Michael at the start of the summer. We drove out to Flagstaff AZ and then spent several days just seeing many of the sights in Arizona and Colorado. I forgot how much I liked Colorado and the mountains when I was there doing my student teaching. I think my favorite part of the trip was around Ouray, CO. We had rented a 4x4 Ford Expedition and took some of the back roads to see a old deserted mining town. I just may have to retire to Colorado........ The weather was beautiful...Expand for more
- very, very low humidity - around 15%. Then came back to Indiana with temperature the low 90's and humidity running about 80-85%! But, at least this summer has been more normal - like I remember they used to be. I have really enjoyed our Indiana weather so far this summer. The boys are growing up and it is harder and harder to get them out in the wilds for a hike with me....but we still make it out occasionally. Glad I had kids late in life - at least I had camping partners for quite some time. Seems like it is hard to get folks my age out in the wilds! We still love road trips and vacations. One of our favorite vacation locations is Lake Michigan, around Pentwater and Silver Lake Dunes. I am currently the coordinator for Citizen Advocacy of South-Central Indiana, Inc.(CASCI) This is an organization that facilitates matches between people with disabilities and other members of the community for the purpose of friendship and advocacy. CASCI always needs people interested in becoming Advocates..... ......and I decided to start driving a school bus last year....what a blast! I love driving that big yellow bus on the country roads. I get paid for watching the seasons change, the sun rise, the moon set, all kinds of neat things. I drive a country route so its a perfect match for me. It also gives me time to take care of other things I need to do. I have truly enjoyed life so far. I graduated from IU with a BS in Education. I did my student teaching on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. I worked with a delinquency prevention program with the Girl Scouts, I tried my hand at selling real estate for a few years, and I have worked with people with developmental disabilities since 1989. My son, Michael, and I hope to take a road trip out to the the south-west this summer. I have told him how different it is out there. I am so glad I am still able to get out and about.... having kids late has helped me stay young at heart, mind and body.
