Diane's Story

Life Hello: Well I don't know where to start. My life since high school has been my greatest learning experience. In 1979 I began working for the Provincial Government and have remained there to this day as a Tax Collection Officer. In 1994 I moved to Ottawa and now reside in the country on the outskirts of the city. I love the peace and serenity of country living. In 2001 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and am proud to say I am now 6 years cancer free. That is my greatest victory!! In 2002 I married a long tall cowboy from southwest Colorado and my life has been a whirlwind of travel and excitement ever since. He works for the United States Foreign Service and, 6 weeks after we were married, I took 3 years leave from my job and followed him to Tashkent, Uzbekistan (borders Afghanistan). I had no idea what I was in for but I was about to learn more than all my years in school could ever teach me. Eight months after arriving in Tashkent I began working at the US Embassy as a secretary in the Executive Office. Although life in Uzbekistan required an enormous cultural change I loved every minute of it. Well, almost every minute. The people were wonderful, the history astounding and the culture fascinating. The war in Iraq had just started and anti Americanism was beginning to really flourish. As westerners our own safety and security were our number one concern. It wasn't long before we were all made brutally aware of just how dangerous life in Uzbekistan had become. On July 31, 2004 a suicide bomber made our Embassy the latest victim in a series of attacks against Americans. It was a horrifying reminder of the dangers surroundig us. I have always been a strong advocate of living life to the fullest and seizing oppor...Expand for more
tunities instead of passing them by. Without such an attitude I would have missed so much. I refuse to live in fear (within reason). As a result, I have certainly had my share of adventures. In just the past four years I felt like a jetsetting maniac hopping around Bukhara, Samarkand, Egypt, Spain, Turkey, Austria, England, Germany, Switzerland and, most recently, Surinam (Dutch Guyana). Cairo and Instanbul had their share of terrorist activity while I was there and I was lucky enough to miss the London subway bombings by just 2 days. Would I do it all again? You bet I would!! There's a huge world out there and so, so much to discover. London is fast becoming one my frequent stomping grounds. I guess you could say I'm almost a regular. If you can't find me in any of those places well, I've been known to set my boots down a time or two in the southwest states and Alberta. Gary and I love Alberta so much we have decided to retire there when the time comes. I've lived a good life and am grateful for so many things. I have my home in the country where l can enjoy solitude and relax a while before setting off again to who knows where. Gary will continue to serve in the Foreign Service for another 3 years at which time he will retire with me in Ottawa. He's constantly on the move so I have to wait until he stays put long enough for me to visit him. I hope life has been good to each and every one of you. Always remember to follow your dreams, take nothing for granted and make the most of the opportunities life presents to you. I always have my computer with me so please don't hesitate to send me an email. You just never know where I might be when I reply. Now if you'll excuse me I have places to go and people to see. Cheers!!
