Dianne's Story

Life Hi All-- I've come a long way from 1970 and right now feel that I am in a circle -- going back to my beginnings and starting over. My first job after high school was at Birchard Public Library where I was in charge of the Children's Room and was the Story Hour leader. At the same time I was going to Terra Community College and working on a degree in Early Childhood Education. I had to drop out after one year due to money. I left the library after two-and-a-half years and went to the Fremont News Messenger where I started as advertising proofreader and then went to being an assistant to the accountant. After a couple years of this, I got a student loan and went back to Terra to finish my Early Childhood degree. I graduated in 1977 and taught and did curriculum at Temple Tot Nursery School. After a couple years, I went back to school again and got my bachelor's degree in Math Education (certified 7-12). I taught one semester of Religion (I was also in the Lay Ministry Program) at SJCC but had to resign due to difficulties with my adopted daughter. I taught math part time at Terra Community College for ten years, then worked on my Master's in Math which I got in 1997. I was the director of the BGSU Math Lab for 12 years. While there, I wrote two math work texts, one published. During the time I was at Terra and then BGSU, I returned to the Catholic faith from Biblical Fundamentalism of which I entered right after high school. The radical sect of fundamentalism that I was in caused me to drop out of life. With the teachings I incurred severe psychological damage. My ten-year experience in netted a ten-year recovery out. During my recovery I wrote many published articles, did talks, seminars, etc. throughout the diocese of Toledo, Ohio on Biblical fundamentalism. I have a four volume unpublished, as of yet, manuscript that is going out on the net in installments. People are using it as alcoholics use AA's "Big Book." If this peaks your interest, write me at motg1980 at aol. (The “Ministry of the Gathering” is an apostolate for Catholics affected by or interested in the affects of American Protestant Evangelical Independent Fundamentalism). In 2003 I moved out to the East Coast. I went back to school for a stint (second master's for second career, this time social work), found out it wasn't for me and tried going back to high school math teaching. I was hired by the Wicomico S...Expand for more
chool District (MD) to finish the year out for a math teacher who left, I had a lot of trouble with discipline and keeping up with lessons and paper grading. College math had so many fewer students and such less demand! I’m also not as young as I used to be! That summer I moved to the Delaware seashore. I then took a full time math position in a charter school in Dover, DE but ran into the same difficulties. A health problem I had struggled with since moving to the East Coast intensified and caused me to not be able to do the job so I had to resign in the third trimester of the year. I took some time off and concentrated on getting my health back. It worked! I started working part time jobs -- part time nanny, tutoring, and then desk clerk at a hotel out here on the beach. I was then hired by the Cape Henlopen High School District (DE)to finish the year out for a teacher who retired. This time I got it! All the pieces from before came together and I had a wonderful time and did a great job. I was hired permanent. Right now I'm in the best phase of my life. I'm healthy, happy, stress free, have two wonderful jobs that I adore -- school during the year, hotel in the summer. And to top it all off -- I live minutes from the gorgeous ocean! God is good! Dianne 2020 Update: May 2, 2012 I was blessed with a grandchild. My daughter has both cognitive disabilities and mental illness. As a result Ohio Social Services was going to take the baby. I stepped in and brought my daughter and granddaughter back to Delaware with me. Delaware Social Services was involved until I was awarded legal guardianship of the baby. Two years later I retired from teaching and my daughter had to go back to an assisted type living experience. Mothering was too hard on her and the baby was developing cognitive and emotional problems due to it. With the absence of her mother, Zari flourished. She is now in second grade and doing wonderfully! The only problem she has is IED, which she is doing very well with therapy and medication. She is the JOY of my life! In 2018 the hotel where I worked was sold and it was a good time to retire. My lumbar arthritis, that was causing teaching to be difficult, was now causing problems with that job. I presently tutor math and statistics through WyzAnt.com and pray earnestly that I can live long enough to get Zari old enough to get by without me. God is still good!
