Dianne's Story
After graduation I drifted from job to job. I hooked up with Frank Scanzillo and we had a son in 1978 who is now 30 and he is the best person I know. How time does fly.
Though I wasn't the happiest during my high school years, I have some fond memories and I wish I had attended some of the reunions and got to know more of you. I miss those relatively care-free days and I can't help but wonder what happened to classmates who lived through our turbulent times.
I moved around a lot after I married. Frank was in Radio so we lived in Lowell, Derry NH, Rochester NH, Fitchburg, Acton, Falmouth, West Yarmouth, Yarmouthport, South Yarmouth, Hyannis and now I live in Dennis. I worked at many various jobs in those places but nothing you would call a career, just a lot of experiments lasting no more than a year or so.
The longest and hardest job I worked at was motherhood and I owned and renovated a Victorian Bed and Breakfast in South Yarmouth for 15 years. It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. I divorced about 12 years ago after being married for more than 25 years. Frank and I remain good friends.
These days I am interested in Ancient history, more recent history and local history, geneology etc. The origins of things mostly. I like to keep up on scientific developments and watch programs on PBS about science and history and I love biographies and documentaries. My favorite movies are foreign flicks and Indie movies. Favorite musicians are Bob Dylan, Metallica, Nirvana and Tom Waits; though I do enjoy Jazz, Classical and even Opera now and then.
I used to dream about living on Cape Cod when I was a young teen. I was fortunate enough to have spent several storybook summers with my aunt and cousins at their unique vacation home at Seacoast Shores in Falmouth. It was an "Art Deco" showplace, built around the 30's right on the water and had it's own dock, beach and boathouse. Those were wonderful times for me. I would take care of my little cousins, go shopping in downtown Falmouth and Hyannis, go swimming and boating, and take trips to Martha's Vinyard in their 40ft fishing boat. Standing on the bow, I would hold tight as we bounced over the ocean waves. Whe...Expand for more
n I wanted to be alone...I would take a rowboat to the sand spit and wander the shore looking for horseshoe crabs, eels and scallops. At night we would play board games, go skinny dipping and occaisionally we went to the Drive-in...they had Drive-in's in every town back then. I remember seeing the movies "Advise and Consent" and "Ocean's 11", as well as family films like " The Parent Trap". On the week-ends my aunt and uncle would entertain large crowds of friends and cook huge meals. The home had a kitchen that was like a restaurant kitchen; all stainless steel, with 2 stoves, 2 sinks, dishwasher, counters all around, and a huge fridge. It was the first time I had ever seen a glass brick wall and the living room had a bar, cathedral ceilings and a huge fireplace and enormous window that faced the ocean. The dining room was called "the porch". It was a very long room with a very long table made for banquets. It had a slate floor and a wall of windows that faced the water. Some of the guests would stay overnight in the boat house next door, that had several guest bedrooms and it's own kitchen sitting room and bathrooms and also had outdoor enclosed showers. The house was built for partying.
To my pleasant surprise, I actually moved to the Cape about 30 years ago when I was expecting my Son and my (former) Husband got a job at radio station, "WOCB" in West Yarmouth. I have lived here ever since and have loved it. We rented several homes in Mashpee and Yarmouth before buying and renovating the old Victorian guesthouse in Bass River, which we ran as a Bed and Breakfast for about 15 years. I learned a lot about DIY from that experience and had a lot of fun as well.
Life is very busy for me now, though I am mostly retired. I help my son renovate and manage his new home (a duplex), I garden, go to movies with friends, go to the beach (of course), take in local theatre, concerts and events and visit family in Billerica and surrounding areas. My aunt and her family live in Florida (Port St Lucie) and I try to visit them once every 3-5 years and I try to get into Boston at least twice a year for museums or concerts. I would say overall, life is pretty good right now.
